Back in the 1970s (and earlier), parents didn’t stress about our health and safety as much as they do today. It’s not that they cared less – they just didn’t worry compulsively about it. Quoting: Person445 Parents of 2014 need to be reminded of how less restricted, less supervised, less obsessively safety-conscious things were… and it was just fine. Con't @ [link to read.feedly.com] True that. We used to be in the wars all the time, cuts, bruises, falling out of trees. Kids today are all mass media casualties. Big sooky wimps. |

Most kids at first grade stayed home by themselves after school. We played outside until dark with no supervision. Starting at age 12 I started going by myself to my art classes in bad winter and late after school. And so on... I went on two weeks vacation with a friend in 6th grade. Her grandma was supposed to supervise us, but she decided to go to her village, so we stayed in the apartment by ourselves, no problem... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 23942 United States 03/05/2015 10:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I went for a walk around my folks' neighborhood while visiting and witnessed a dad outside in the front lawn with his son who was probably 5-6 years old. They were playing "wiffle" ball, but with one of those BIG-ASS boom-boom red bats….you know what I mean? Fucking kid had a helmet on. I chalked it up to the fact that I might be missing something, but I know that kid doesn't ride the short bus. Sigh |

User ID: 35657415 United States 03/05/2015 11:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ahhhh the memories. we didn’t wear seatbelts back then because the parents were much better and much less distracted drivers...no cell phones, no texting,..... And you didn’t have to worry about the other drivers as much for the same reasons.....not to mention that many places still had only 2 lane roads, one lane bridges, no brakedown shoulders and no yellow stripes on the road. if you fell off something/got hurt somehow, and bactine didn’t fix it, then you went to the doctor and got a cast or stitches.....and you had a story to tell (or embellish) about how it happened. Ahhh the smell and the burn of the bactine...... The knees of jeans got patched, repatched, and patched again.....and when they finally couldn’t be patched they became cut-off shorts for the summer. unbelievable how much different is today...... |

There are just as many murderers, rapists, sick fucks as there were in the 70's you just hear about it instantly now. The internet, not TV, is the single greatest reason why parents and people in general are suspicious & paranoid about everyone and everything. |

No one knew where we were. We knew the rules and followed them (mostly). Had fun, learned responsibilities, used our brains to think for ourselves, knew that any adult who saw us doing something wrong would contact our parents or march us home. Cops weren't called. Seat belts were never used and there was less death in auto accidents. Autos were made to PROTECT the occupants. Seat belt laws were the beginning of the nanny state but no one saw it - it was for our own good don't ya know. School teachers lead by example. Children were NOT managed, they were taught. Teachers were never mistaken for a student. They were held accountable and dressed appropriately. Though I do remember a teacher who thought wearing a mini skirt to parent/teacher conferences, who was told by one of the fathers "If you want to dress like that when I am not with my wife, I will stare all day but as long as my wife is here, you not only disrespect her and myself, you disrespect your job." He left the room with his wife and the teacher was fired the next day. The best damned music ever!!!!! The year of 1977!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quoting: Boss Moss We used to bring knives to school to play it at recess. Usually just pocket knives but I had a fixed blade in a sheath worn on my belt a few times as well. I am a female, I am cute and I use to run around the neighborhood butt naked at times, unsupervised, until I was four years old and never got molested or stolen. played around deep lakes by myself too. I never drowned and I knew when the sun started to go down it was time to go home throughout my time growing up. Never was there any problem. |

Consider that theres always a percentage of perverts. That percentage WILL GO UP when general population goes up. Figure it out. genius |

User ID: 50641014 United States 03/05/2015 11:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Great thread, OP 5 stars. The 70s were pretty awesome. I'm grateful to have been alive when people didn't live in a perpetual state of fear. For those too young to remember the 70s, many of the movies reflected the social and cultural differences today. Remember at the end of the Bad News Bears after little Timmy Lupis hurled the 2nd place trophy at the rival Yankees and every kid on the team had a bottle of beer? You'll never see a kids movie with an ending like that ever again. Good times. |
