I believe I have heard that alluded to in the past as well. The only thing I can suppose with such a statement is that he is giving her equal ground to speak to and with a group of men. The 12 disciples.

If she was as close to Jesus as some have proposed, then her presence around a large group of men would have been common. Probably added to the whole bit about her being a whore as well. Woman and men keeping company together to discuss God and scripture was probably not widely practiced in that day. And even today the genders are separated in religious prayer and worship.
