Here is the big secret. Not even indoctrinated people really get it.
Indoctrinated people doubt. It is the stem of their fear and is the blazing neon sign that says "you're doing it all wrong".
You see if they had no doubt, they wouldn't believe, they would know. If they knew, there would be no reason to defend their viewpoint and only a reason to understand another's viewpoint better.

They can't have an intellectual debate because they've been taught by their religion to let the church and the Bible do their thinking for them. They are not to question anything for fear of going to hell, which is so ingrained in them that they actually fear going to hell if they don't toe the religious line they've been taught since babyhood. Ask them a question where they need to think and their mind slams shut so they quote scripture.
