Yep, and what you managed to completely overlook is that there is a very big something "acting against it" - the earth's gravity.

If you don't have enough oomph (aka "delta-v") then you'll just fall back towards earth. To get to the moon you have to deliver a big push, and the shuttle couldn't carry enough fuel to do that.

There are plenty of people who'd be very happy to work on a new lunar landing programme (me included) but first you need to convince governments to put up the money, and keep putting up the money until it's done.

Even by the time of Apollo 14 there was very little political support for continuing the programme, and it was eventually wound down early with Apollo 17 being the last flight.

It's not that it can't be done nowadays (as China will probably show the world in a few years) it's that western governments have no interest in it, and can't see the benefits...

I believe the Russians thought it was more like two METRES.

Astromutt will probably say they only recently discover Van Allen belt and it didn't exist during the Apollo era and that is how the apollo was able to go and land on the moon.

Back then there was Van Halen belt which did not have harmful radiation.
