SKYKING's : What do they really mean?
Anyone know what a SKYKING really means?
As far as I know it's means a change in the DEFCON, a nuclear strike directive or emergency commands?

Re: SKYKING's : What do they really mean?
I'll take a random stab..

The first question I asked myself: Why would they communicate with this method.

I had a couple possible ideas, but the one that sticks out to me is that it can be used to communicate with someone or something you don't want the location of known.

To me, the most applicable case is submarines.

So, perhaps not directly related to a status, but more so a communication mechanism for sub's whose location would be compromised if direct communication were attempted?

The communications would then be determined with codes that can be mapped safely on either end without exposing any sensitive data.

Hard to pin-point the reason for the name, perhaps in some kind of tongue-in-cheek reference to refer to the people giving the sub it's orders..

Agree with this, they tend to say NO REPLY at the end of messages to let the receiver know not to compromise their position.

Re: SKYKING's : What do they really mean?
I think this fits everything since we would definitely want to communicate defcon, emergency commands and strike directives to them.

They still do those out in the open on HF ? I haven't listened since the early 90s -- there used to be lots of those on 8.890 MHz ...

Re: SKYKING's : What do they really mean?
I have been listening to EAM's and Skyking messages since the middle of the 1980's on various professional shortwave radios.

I still don't know what they mean?

Look up GHFS frequencies, various like 8992 & 11175 MHz in USB upper sideband mode.

You won't have to wait long, sometimes you can hear Phonepatches or calls from Pilots to their families.

RAF Croughton is a hotspot and also planes fly into Zaragoza in Spain from the US before refuelling to go onto the Middle East.

All very interesting when you get into it, as I said, 30 years for me now.

Try it, Amazon have radios that receive USB for under $100 or about £70 here in the UK.

They also broadcast skyking messages purely for training exercises, and quite often.
