I cannot describe how good that felt. Until just now when I did it, it was an insanely great feeling. The look on her face I can't describe, maybe like the deer in the headlights look. Then she walked off down the hallway.fuckyeah5

Congrats!
That’s the thing about progress; all the word means is “continued movement in the same direction.” If the direction was a bad idea to start with, or if it’s passed the point at which it still made sense, continuing to trudge blindly onward into the gathering dark may not be the best idea in the world. Break out of that mental straitjacket, and the range of possible futures broadens out immeasurably.

thank you so much. I found out just a short while ago from my secretary, that these papers I am filing out right now have to go thru my supervisor. So I had to spill the beans. She refused to give me my long overdue promotion, so she has to now deal with it.fuckyeah5

Good employees are hard to find and harder to cultivate. Woe to those who misuse them.

Re: Just told my boss I am might be retiring this october
You beat me by 3 months. I told them several month ago that I would be retiring on my 62nd birthday, but they just shrugged it off. The only other competent person working here is 2 weeks younger than me, and has decided he will leave at 62 also. After several months, a co-worker ask me who would be replacing us. I told him "I don't care, but you could have one of the worthless young guys that have been hired in the last couple of years". Panic set in! The young pups they have been hiring have no work ethic, and don't seem to be trainable. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to do my job, but you do have know your alphabet, and how to count. It's a good middle class living wage. But apparently being able to count is too much to ask.
I'm sorry, I kinda went off on a rant, but it's all true. It's also a sad commentary on America today.

And your successor probably won't get half of it, so there's that.

To start, you may be right, but when if they get competent, it pays OK. Experience, and work ethic do make a difference. We had a lady working here that had no experience, but learned really fast. After a year or two she was making the same wage as me, but she couldn't take the stress of covering for the incompetent kids she had to work with. She went back to school to complete her MBA. Now it's just two of us trying to keep up, with little help from the new guys.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Re: Just told my boss I am might be retiring this october
a big thanks to all, yup, this day has been long coming and today was the final nail in the coffin. my new supervisor is a dictator witch. not sure if she is a feminist, but at anyrate, they will be a bit pressed in finding a replacement as I do a very fine IT type of niche' as well as much broader duties. I am supposed to train this woman who has a masters degree in computer science while I have only a BSEE and is a pay grade higher than myself. I think that was the final straw for me. I am still young and not even 50 yet. I already have a new occupation in mind and it won't involve software/computers, I am completely done with all of that bullshit. Such a scam industry anyways. Had to deal with procurement of software updates for government contracts and you wouldn't believe how often that junk is updated. Then the government gets billed for each update. every 2-3 weeks a huge check gets written.

that could still happen, gave her a demand for the promotion, she balked. so plan B kicked in.

whats going to suck for them, whoever replaces me will take about 6 months of specialized training. minimum.

My boss just chased a snake down the hallways and passed.

In about, 6 months, he will be looking for more snakes to fill the gap.
I fear for the business because I wasted so much time there

When they ask you for help with the training. Tell them you will be more than willing to work for them as a private consultant, but rate will be something in the neighborhood of 3-4x what you were previously making.

Time to leave!!! good for you!!

Life is too short to waste it in a place that is nasty and doesn't respect its workers
WHICH IS MOST PLACES TODAY!!!

I have never worked at a decent place my entire work history. I have been helped all these years by the grace of God.
Not sure who else to give the credit to; because

I have supernaturally been able to leave the bad places after they get REALLY unbearable and move on
I have ALWAYS found another job

and usually at a higher wage!!!

I have given myself a raise over the years.

Good luck OP

I wish I could retire now ; but I have to wait a few more years.
