people have been saying stupid shit like this forever and it's always been wrong humans adjust
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50637366

Sorry, but the world has never been this populated, or did I miss that. Food is something you just can't wish into existence. Without a major depopulation event, those saying it forever will be correct.

What do the schools do with the food the kids decline? Throw it in a different trash can.

Buffet food is giving people the shit's before they throw it out. Who is going to eat that. And who decides who gets what.

Can you imagine rationing like during WW2? Today's society would never adjust.

With population growing leaps and bounds, food shortage is unavoidable.

Yes I believe there will be a food shortage of mass proportions. All it will take is one failed growing season, and then see how your shopping goes. The last part of your sentence is unintelligible, sorry.

absolute BS, sorry OP. There is more than enough arable land to feed the world population many times larger than it is now. Problem is people would have to grow their own food and "process" it to keep it cheap and and vast majority are are too lazy. Only a third of those will buckle down and get off their asses even if they are starving.

I am thinking of our own gardens, and not wasting food.

School cafeterias have 2 categories of foods:

"must offers" and

"must takes".

the must offer foods MUST be offered to the student, who may take them or decline them.

This saves waste!

the "must takes" cannot be declined. The student must take them whether they intend to eat them or not.

and boy do they fill the trash barrels in schools.

make all foods voluntary in the lunch line, or better yet, tell the kids to bring from home.

My kids attended a private school that could not afford a cafeteria. No waste there.

Very true, if we don't start growing some of our own food, one day things may get very hungry.

Time to put in a garden.

There is so much empty land in the U.S. that could be farmed its not even funny ! Get in your car and drive around the states of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri...

Anyone see the study claiming 7 billion people could fit in the size of Texas with each person having 1,000 sq feet ?

To the poster who wondered if FLOTUS has banned brown-bagging of lunches in schools, as far as I know the answer to that is NOT YET.

Some districts have banned letting kids share food.(this is under the guise of protecting from peanut allergies).
Some do not permit homebaked treats to be brought in by family of students or by staff for student birthdays.

some have free ( my term: taxpayer-funded ) lunch and breakfast.

no need to ban there. The kids think anyone who brings in a lunch when they can get it for free is foolish.

.gov pays farmers big money to stop growing food, called "conservation". big money in not farming

figure, put some in conservation, a cell tower, and small big lot subdivision, no more small farm exists. and retired

i've noticed little clusters here and there with new mcmansions with older trees on property, this was an old farm property

Simply converting the nature-strips to edible vegetation would be enough to sustain the average suburb. But that's not taxable... It'll never be legal.

No, I have no issues with food shortage, But a simple fact remains, crops are dependent on the sun and weather. What if for some freak reason, ie, a repeat of recent history, a year with no summer???

Even with all the GMO crap, the heavy use of growth hormones, steroids, and who knows what, it will be a losing battle. People had better go back to raising their own foods instead of planting flowers and mowing grass.

If the US stopped spending so much space and resources on growing animals for food and converted all that land to plant based food products there wouldn't be such a big waste. The fact that humans don't need animal products to survive just shows how delusional North Americans are.

But you know, you gotta have that BACON!

Big Agriculture is the problem. Small, local farms is the solution. Along with taking personal responsibility in growing all you can.

Smaller farms manage rainfall far better as a whole.

Watch out for the "organic" labels as they have to pay big bucks to appease the USDA labeling requirements.

Sadly, as the original post states, the average person won't know what hit them till it's too late.
