The CYBER CALIPHATE Has Hacked A Virginia County's Website. FBI Investigating Series Of Attacks By ISIS.

The Cyber Caliphate has been busy hacking government websites.

First they hacked into the Pentagon's Twitter and Youtube accounts.

When they do this, they put out false information. Like they said Obama was going to make a speech on cyber security, and he did not...it was one of their lies.

They appear to be able to hack any website they please, and this is a real threat to National Security.

FROM LINK:

They’ve hacked into some of the best computers in the world,” the county’s information resource manager, Don Robertson, told the station. “So … while we are certainly disappointed, we are going to take every step that we can to clean it up and make sure the public is not impacted by it.” He added that the website, which he said is run by a third party, has been targeted by hackers in the past.

The hack is reminiscent of this week’s defacement of the U.S. Central Command’s Twitter and Youtube accounts. A group calling themselves the “Cyber Caliphate” posted “I love ISIS” banners on the accounts and sent out false tweets just as President Obama was giving a speech on cyber security on Monday

That's quite the backwoods county to get hacked. Likely some petulant kid. Unless there's an ISIS camp in the area.

Many county websites go through companies that sell custom software. I don't know if this was one of them, but let's just assume that it is.

If they hack into one site using the software, they now know a) that vulnerability is exploitable and b) what software they can expect on the other side. Larger counties will have better hardware security and more monitoring, so it would be difficult to test the "hack".

hf I work in web. A lot of my job is reducing vulnerabilities to hackers, so this recent wave of hacks has been of particular interest. I've read theories that they're targeting websites using specific software(s), a few of which are commonly used by some of my clients.

As far as what they'll do with our information...probably nothing. From what I've read, this is less about "gaining" something from the end-user (us) and more about instilling fear and/or controlling online behavior.

You mean the CIA is continuing it's hacking campaign in order to make sure the new Cyber Security laws sail through unopposed kinda like the Patriot Act? Or do you also think 19 highjackers with box cutters managed to bypass NORAD all by themselves?

The situation's bad, but not catastrophic (the ISIS situation generally, not just this hack).

I mean, it's pretty catastrophic for innocents in Iraq/Syria, but not yet for us or the world.

 Quoting: Mountain Woman

Not enough data to venture a guess right now. Everything I've seen so far suggests most of the self-declared Islamic hacker groups are relatively unskilled. Alone, they aren't able to do much appreciable damage. Twitter hacks are a dime a dozen, and the CENTCOM escapade was only noteworthy because of the target they chose.

What worried me was the link between the Caliphate and groups such as Lizard Squad (responsible for gaming platform attacks). At least one member of LS publicly aligned himself with the Caliphate. I'm a little curious as to what the link is. Is there a coincidental overlap in membership, or are members of groups supporting ISIS joining more advanced, but largely anarchistic, groups to have more fire power against targets? Are these groups really even backing ISIS, or are they a bunch of kids with too much time on their hands and needed a flag to fly to publicly cover their bullshit?

If it continues on how it has been, it's going to end up an extremely inconvenient non-event. They'll deface sites across the board, security holes will be plugged up, and nothing much will come of it. People will lose data security, but that happens on a frighteningly regular basis anyway. Data leaks aren't a new thing, and hundreds of thousands (sometimes millions) of users are compromised monthly on various services.

This is much more accurate than ISIS. Why would ISIS hack a county's website in Virginia randomly. More about creating fear to instrument security laws.
