Near yellowstone could be Idaho Falls/Jackson hole/Cody, just be ready for long winters, especially if you're on the eastern slope.

As I understand, a hell of a lot of winter and very little humidity. I'm used to a hell of a lot of southern humidity!

Re: Wyoming. Can residents help me?
Most people in Idaho live in or around the treasure valley, that's where all the work is. Sometimes that sucks here is SW Idaho but, we have a little land and enjoy living here and playing in the rest of the state when we can.

Yellowstone is about a 5-6hr drive, been there many times. I don't plan on staying here in the winter once I retire, I'll be a snowbird. I'm tired of winter, we finally got to see the sun for the first time in weeks yesterday. And in the summer we get like 3 months of nothing but sunshine, little to no rain.

Re: Wyoming. Can residents help me?
You will love it.

If you are on the East or Northeast side of Yellowstone The winters are a touch colder but very sunny.

The Idaho side of Yellowstone seems to be a little warmer but more gloomy in the cloud cover.

The people in the area are very down to earth, not pretentious. Not into the showy city clothing type stuff.

Montana has more of a drug culture than Idaho due to the LDS influence being stronger in Idaho.

Wyoming is conservative, windy and sparse. Having said that Cody would be the absolute bomb to live in.

All three states around Yellowstone are different.

Bozeman, Montana is more liberal and relaxed about drug culture. Nice college town with trees and mountains. Bozeman is truly a post card beauty.

Billings, Montana is completely Big Sky Montana with more open terrain less trees. The Rim Rock cliffs line the city. The people are more conservative, down to earth and very friendly. Costco is very very talkative ect. It has an over grown small town atmosphere but it is the largest city in Montana with approximately 100,000 people. It has crime.

Cody, Wyoming is perfection but on the small town side of things. A bit touristy. Very windy at times but sunny and more classic western dry beauty with stunning Mountains.

Skiing is awesome in the area. Even if you are from the South you really need to take up the winter sports. Try cross country skiing at the very least. Snowmobiling is bigger in Idaho/ Yellowstone area especially Island Park. Red Lodge is a great family ski area if your moving closer to Billings area. Bozeman has Brider Bowl and Big Sky resort down about 30 min away...

This region is gorgeous. The people are wonderful. The winters are COLD but piercingly beautiful.

The cost of living seems better on the Idaho side of things.
I would guess Cody and Bozeman to be the most expensive.

More info than you wanted, but hope your life adventure goes well.

There is a lot of difference between living in the mountains and living in a town in the mountains.

So it would be helpful know which it will be.

If you are moving to the mountains out of town, probably better wait til spring. It gets pretty snowy and cold in the mountains there.

It's actually the foothills of the mountains, considered desert. I know that it is a hell of a bad time to be relocating but I'm in a bad spot right now and we really need to be together, been apart since November and there is a lot of love and common ground here. It's a very small town and really in the middle of nowhere, perfect for our needs.

Re: Wyoming. Can residents help me?
Worked this past year in Billings.... economy is diverse and there is a lot of work compared to many other places, especially in the trades.... This was 1 hour from Custer National Forest... then up to Yellowstone. It is the most intense and beautiful country I have ever seen. Lots of outdoor activities, but cold ass in the winter. Got there in May and it was 40-59 degrees... there were only two days that it hit 100 but did not at all feel like it. IT is really dry.... it can rain and be dry again 20 minutes after rain stops. Tons of places to disappear. Good hunting and fishing. If you would be prepared it seems that it would be a good survival place to be if you are young. The Beartooth highway is incredible but only open May 15 to Oct 15. I loved this area of the US... but it ain't as nice as where I live in Costa!!! Cheers!

What is this non-sense? Billings "big-sky country with less trees"? There are no trees in montana except short coniferous ones in/on the mountains -- most of the state is prairie by the way (no trees at all).

Bozeman "more relaxed drug culture"? Where do you get this crap? Medicinal marijuana is as legal in bozeman as it is in the rest of the state. Meth is just as prevalent as in other rural places.

Other than that OP, most people aren't very good fits for up here -- not a lot of cultural diversity. Everybody's either white or an indian and neither are very friendly to blacks.

Also, don't bring any "jew-hating" bs up here. You may think you find an audience but you will only find yourself in a tough spot.

Most people (outside of bigger towns like bozeman / billings / missoula etc) may appear to be your equal, or even inferior to you, but in truth they're just working seasonal jobs or trying to find something to do with their time, as they are tied into old farming families that own stretches of grazing lands close to the size of some states (including nation states) and essentially have nothing pressing to do with their lives.

Ask away. I know everything.
