Eh, it'd have to take a typhoon to bring down an airbus. Even then the pilot would've/should've reported hostile weather and turned around.

Look at the FlightRadar24 track before contact was lost. There were some significant airspeed and altitude fluctuations right at the end. This indicates some very bad weather and wind sheer turbulence:

[link to www.flightradar24.com]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28359302

Significant?

I saw slight changes , nowhere near "significant" on the links playback
 Quoting: Thetruthmonger

There are airspeed fluctuations of around plus/minus 10 kts. That is significant airspeed fluctuation at that altitude, and you can see the resulting altitude fluctuations. Plus/minus ten kts airspeed fluctuation due to vertical wind sheer can be severe. Not enough to break an aircraft under normal circumstances, but considering AirAsia is a cut rate airline, who knows about maintenance. This aircraft was not particularly old - about 6.5 years of service.

There were several aircraft nearby the area where signal from #QZ8501 was lost

But I guess they didn't get affected by the weather, hmm

"The weather was not good - it was bad -- at the estimated location the plane lost contact. We just received a weather report from the national meteorological, geophysics and climatology agency," said Hadi.

Mr Tatang Zainudin of Indonesia's national search and rescue agency also told MetroTV that the pilot might have faced extreme weather condition.

The Straits Times understands that Singapore's RSAF will be dispatching a C130 to look for the missing plane.

The max range of an Airbus A-320 is about 6 hours of flight time with a full load of pax and full fuel.Or about 2700 nautical miles.
That area has NASTY weather. I have flown through that area many times and some storms grow incredibly fast.

It also has volcanic activity. A 747 lost all four engines going through a cloud of volcanic ash years ago. Do not know if any ash advisories were issued.

 Quoting: Dervish

Yes, but typically, the jet engines will die when they hit the ash clouds, and then can be restarted when they descend into cleaner air.

I am not believing this is weather related.

The Airbus 320 is a big strong stable and reliable aircraft.

Some news sites are probably going for the number of people that the plane is made to carry. I see numbers between 150-168.

only thing regarding discrepancies in people on board would be some places might report passengers only and not crew.

but that would be inhumane to just not mention crew as though they are not human.

so we are back to square one. what's with discrepancies in people on board?

Finally, and I expect to get flamed for this but the statistics will prove it, the quality of pilots varies wildly by country. In any airline overseas the capability of crew members is very uneven. As well as maintenance personel.

It may be a hijacking,a terrorist event, bad weather, sabotage, volcanic ash,bad pilotage or a combination of them all.
