New World Systems offers software that allows dispatchers to enter in a person’s name to see if they’ve had contact with the police before. Provided crime data, PredPol claims that its software “forecasts highest risk times and places for future crimes.” These and other technologies are supplanting and enhancing traditional police work.

Public safety organizations, using DHS funding, are set to begin building a $7-billion nationwide first-responder wireless spying network, called FirstNet.

Beware, has been sold to police departments since 2012 by a private company, Intrado. This mobile application crawls over billions of records in commercial and public databases for law enforcement needs. The application “mines criminal records, Internet chatter and other data to churn out … profiles in real time,” according to one article in an Illinois newspaper.

Here’s how the company describes it on their website:

Accessed through any browser (fixed or mobile) on any Internet-enabled device including tablets, smartphones, laptop and desktop computers, Beware® from Intrado searches, sorts and scores billions of commercial records in a matter of seconds-alerting responders to potentially deadly and dangerous situations while en route to, or at the location of a call.

Crunching all the database information in a matter of seconds, the Beware algorithm then assigns a score and “threat rating” to a person — green, yellow or red. It sends that rating to a requesting officer.

For example, working off a home address, Beware can send an officer basic information about who lives there, their cell phone numbers, whether they have past convictions and the cars registered to the address. Police have had access to this information before, but Beware makes it available immediately.

Yet it does far more — scanning the residents’ online comments, social media and recent purchases for warning signs. Commercial, criminal and social media information, including, as Intrado vice president Steve Reed said in an interview with urgentcomm.com, “any comments that could be construed as offensive,” all contribute to the threat score.

The federal government is preparing for another “surge” in refugees and this time they won’t be coming illegally from Central America.

The U.S. State Department announced this week that the first major contingent of Syrian refugees, 9,000 of them, have been hand-selected by the United Nations for resettlement into communities across the United States.

The announcement came Tuesday on the State Department’s website.

WND reported in September that Syrians would make up the next big wave of Muslim refugees coming to the U.S., as resettlement agencies were lobbying for the U.S. to accept at least 75,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

Until now, the U.S. had accepted only 300 of the more than 3.2 million refugees created by the Syrian civil war in which ISIS, El Nusra and other Sunni Muslim jihadist rebels are locked in a protracted battle with the Shiite regime of Bashar al-Assad.

But the U.S. government has been the most active of all nations in accepting Islamic refugees from other war-torn countries, such as Iraq, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Now, the Syrians will be added to the mix. They are cleared for refugee status by the U.N. high commissioner on refugees (UNHCR), who assigns them to various countries. Once granted refugee status by the U.N. they are screened by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for any ties to terrorist organizations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is issuing a warning, one Americans need to pay attention to before US politicians take us past the point of no return, if they haven't done so already.

While the media in Russia is "state-run," meaning that one never knows how much is true or how much is propaganda, the flip side of that particular coin is that nothing goes out over it without the express permission, or instigation of Russian leadership, so it is clear that when their articles are written or news spoken, it is exactly what Putin wants the world to know.

With that said, the very first paragraph of Russia Today's editorial titled "America tuned out as Congress bangs war drum against Russia," which states that US House resolution 758 has "brought the nation one step closer to all-out-war with Russia," is a dire warning directly from Russia to the populace of the United States.

Future historians - that is, assuming there are humans still around to contemplate history - may one day point to House Resolution 758 as the single piece of legislation that sparked a global conflagration between two leading nuclear powers.

The article also goes on to take a look at House resolution 758, breaking it down, giving a birds-eye view of how Russian leadership views these actions on the part of the US Congress and it appears that things are about to get much uglier.

Eric Hillman prosecuted drunk driving cases, but, when he uncovered a witness who had the potential to help someone he was prosecuting, he claims his bosses told him not to share that information with the other side.



He had been assigned a case against a man named David Sims, who was charged with Intoxication Assault and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

But when he started researching it, another story emerged.

"Found out that there was a witness who was not listed on the police reports who indicated that the defendant probably was not drunk or did not appear to be drunk to them and therefore hadn't really committed the crime," said Hillman's other attorney, Chris Gale.

He told his supervisor about it and claims his supervisor told him he did not need to inform the other side, which is required in the discovery process of a case in court.


Hillman did not want to wrongly pursue the case, so he called the State Bar of Texas for their opinion.

"They affirmed that he in fact needed to turn over that witness to the defense, so he went back to the supervisors and told them he was going to disclose the witness and he was fired the morning of the trial," Pratt said.

The oil bust is exposing cracks in the $1.3 trillion junk-bond market, putting pressure on a key source of corporate financing and potentially crimping economic growth.

U.S. junk-bond prices have fallen 8% since late June, according to data from Barclays PLC. One-third of that drop has come this month alone, putting the market on track for its worst annual performance since the financial crisis.

While much of the stress has been in the energy sector on the heels of the sharp decline in oil prices, lately the woe is spreading across the junk market.

Each of the 21 high-yield sectors in a U.S. junk-bond index tracked by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. registered losses in the five days ended Dec. 9.

Army selling Humvees to the public for the first time — but there's a catch

If you, like this author, always dreamed of using a camo-covered, Army-issue Humvee as your personal golf cart, your dreams can finally come true — for a price.

According to the Army Times, the Department of Defense will start auctioning off as many as 4,000 military-spec Humvees to the public as part of its surplus-reduction efforts. In previous years, the off-road behemoths would have been sent straight to the military scrapyard, but due to changes in policies in recent years and what the Defense Logistics Agency spokesperson Michelle McCaskill describes as “cooperation from other government offices," the used Humvees will be sold instead of scrapped for the first time.

Via a contract won by IronPlanet.com, the first batch of 25 surplus Humvees will go up for auction on Wednesday. Most appear to have been built between 1987 and 1994, with anywhere from 1,361 to 38,334 miles of service to this country as troop and/or cargo transporters. Each of the current and future Humvees to be publically auctioned will have been inspected for defects prior to sale and stripped of any “military characteristics;" any wily-eyed customers and vigilante types will have to supply their own armor or artillery deployment devices.

Prices will start at $10,000, and owners are responsible for arranging transportation of their new playthings and paying in full within three days of the sale. In case you were planning to rumble up to church on Christmas morning and scare the little old ladies in the parking lot in one of these things, they will not be considered roadworthy. Not only will there be no titles for them, the lucky winners have to sign documents specifying exactly how they'll be used.

A federal judge has found parts of President Obama’s new deportation amnesty to be unconstitutional, issuing a scathing memo Tuesday accusing him of usurping Congress’s power to make laws, and dismantling most of the White House’s legal reasoning for circumventing Congress.

Judge Arthur J. Schwab, sitting in the western district of Pennsylvania, said presidents do have powers to use discretion in deciding how to enforce the law, but said Mr. Obama’s new policy goes well beyond that, setting up a full system for granting legal protections to broad groups of individuals. He said Mr. Obama writing laws — a power that’s reserved for Congress, not the president.

LONDON — As oil prices continued to fall, the British oil giant BP said on Wednesday that it would cut jobs and take $1 billion in restructuring charges over the next five quarters.

The company said that it did not yet know how many people would be let go, but that most of the money would go to severance packages. With the amount of money earmarked, that could mean thousands of job cuts. BP had 84,000 employees worldwide at the end of last year.

The price of the international benchmark, Brent crude, was down more than 1.5 percent on Wednesday to about $65.32. It is now down more than 40 percent since June.

"At least 141 people, most of them students as young as 12, have been killed and more than 100 others injured in a Taliban seizure of a military-run school in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan, according to provincial authorities.

The numbers of dead and injured may still rise as the casualties of the assault are counted. The army told AFP that the number had risen to 141 late Tuesday afternoon, up from a previously cited figure of 130.

The Army Public School on Warsak Road hosts some 400 to 500 students and teachers, who are presumed to have been taken hostage by the assailants, ARY News reported.

According to initial reports, up to seven militants dressed in Pakistan military uniforms entered the school compound on Tuesday morning. They torched a car at the site and proceeded with a raid on the facility.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, but said it was not targeting the pupils.

"Our suicide bombers have entered the school, they have instructions not to harm the children, but to target army personnel," Taliban spokesman Muhammad Umar Khorasani told Reuters.

The militants however see older students at the school as legitimate targets for their attack.
