Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, the last of three children who claimed to see the Virgin at Fatima and who revealed a vision the Catholic Church said foretold the attempt to kill Pope John Paul, died on Sunday, the Church said.

Dos Santos, 97, who later became a nun, was the eldest of the shepherd children who in 1917 told of seeing apparitions of the Virgin Mary six times. She died at her Carmelite convent at Coimbra in central Portugal.

"She had been weak for several weeks and had not left her cell," Coimbra Bishop Albino Cleto told the Church's Radio Renascenca.

The Vatican interpreted one part of the visions as foretelling the attempt to kill the Pope and Communism's persecution of Christianity. The apparitions took place the same year as the Russian Revolution.

The Pope believes the Madonna of Fatima saved his life on May 13, 1981, when Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca nearly killed him in St Peter's Square. The shooting took place on one of the anniversaries of the 1917 apparitions.

In a sign of gratitude a year after the assassination attempt, the Pope had one of the 9mm bullets which Agca fired at him placed in the crown of the statue at Fatima.

"One hand fired the bullet and another guided it," the Pope once said of Agca's attempt to kill him.

Dos Santos was said by believers to be the main recipient of prophecies from the Virgin about key 20th century events.

The first two parts of the prophecies were known for decades. The first saw a vision of hell, the second predicted the outbreak of World War II.

But it was the third part, the so-called third secret of Fatima, which kept the world intrigued for more than 80 years.The Vatican revealed its interpretation of the vision during the Pope's visit to Fatima in May 2000 on the anniversary of the assassination attempt. One of her last public appearances was with the Pope at Fatima.

Dos Santos's recollection of the third part of the visions, which she wrote down in 1944, saw "a bishop dressed in white (and) we had the impression that it was the Holy Father."

As the vision continued, the children say the Pope reaching the top of a mountain where "he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him."

Before the Vatican unveiled the vision, papal envoys visited Dos Santos in her cloistered convent to seek her opinion of the Vatican's interpretation and her permission to reveal it.

"She repeated her conviction that the vision of Fatima concerns above all the struggle of atheistic communism against the Church and against Christians, and describes the terrible sufferings of the victims of the faith in 20th century," a Vatican document said in 2000.

The document went on to say: "When asked: 'Is the principal figure in the vision the Pope?' Sister Lucia replied at once that it was.

Dos Santos was born the youngest of seven children in a peasant family in Aljustrel, a village in central Portugal.

The events at Fatima unfolded against a backdrop of religious persecution under anti-clerical factions that ruled Portugal after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1910.

In 1916 she experienced her first vision, when an angel appeared to the children, she wrote in her memoirs.

On May 13, 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to her and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marta on an oak tree. On her last appearance before an estimated 50,000 onlookers, witnesses claim to have experienced a 15-minute spectacle of bright lights and rainbow colors.

In her memoirs, dos Santos said the Virgin Mary appeared to the children six times in 1917. Jacinta and Francisco died in the influenza pandemic in 1919 and 1920.

The two were beatified, the last step to sainthood, by Pope John Paul during his Fatima visit in 2000.

One of her last visitors was actor Mel Gibson, director of the 2004 movie "The Passion of The Christ." He met her at the convent in July 2004 and gave her a DVD of his movie.

Mel Gibson's Secret Meeting With Fatima Visionary

Actor Mel Gibson held a secret meeting with one of the famous visionaries of Fatima, Sister Lucia of Portugal.

Sister Lucia, now 98 years of age, is a cloistered nun who as a child saw and spoke with the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.

Her visions and those of her two childhood friends, both since passed away, were both prophetic and apocalyptic. The Catholic Church accepted the visions as authentic.

Fatima-based Unity Publishing's Richard Salbato recently revealed in an online report that after the nuns asked for a private showing of Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ," Gibson not only OK'd the viewing, but the actor flew to Coimbra, Portugal, to personally introduce the film to Lucia and her Sisters.

During Lent of 2004, the nuns at the convent in Coimbra, where Sister Lucia lives, wanted to see the film as a devotional aid in preparation for Good Friday and Easter.

Unable to leave the convent or meet face-to-face with outsiders because of the strict Carmelite rules governing cloistered sisters – and lacking the modern convenience of a DVD player – they sought to contact Mel Gibson's Icon Productions for help.

According to Unity, word was sent out from the Convent to make contact with Icon or Gibson to get a DVD for the convent.

Thanks to a girl in Porto, Portugal, Luciana Regadas, who knew a volunteer worker for Icon Productions and Mel Gibson, Lourdes Gutierrez, this contact was made. Gutierrez had been involved with the movie in a volunteer capacity, helping to put together two screenings in the Miami, Fla., area.

According to Unity, "Mel Gibson had come to Fatima in September of 2003 to ask Our Lady for help in the film and later Jim Caviezel (the actor who played Christ) came to show the film to religious institutions to get their opinions of the movie. He even went to the Convent in Coimbra to show the film but was refused because he insisted on going behind the cloister which is not permitted."

Lourdes Gutierrez recalled that "Ninety-two e-mails back and forth later and many phone calls, a deal was set to show the film to the nuns. This was difficult because there were no DVDs yet and only 1 inch tapes, which require special cameras and large pull down screens.

"We even got approval for Mel Gibson to see Lucia in a private meeting, but because Mel Gibson might be attacked as using Lucia to promote his film, he, Mel Gibson, and not the convent, insisted that such a visit would be strictly secret.

"In the end only Father Condor, the convent and the Icon Production crew knew of the date of showing the film. We knew the month but that was all. It must have cost Mel Gibson ten to twenty thousand dollars to show this film to the convent because it took a full crew of camera men.

"Mel Gibson later came into Portugal to promote the Portuguese version of the film and then sneaked over to the Convent without anyone knowing and met with Sister Lucia. We were told not to print this or let anyone know unless the Convent or Mel Gibson gave permission for it. This did not come until after the film ran its course in the theaters and the DVD ran its campaign in the stores."

Mel Gibson visited Lucia of Fatima at the Carmel convent last July. He was accompanied by his wife, Robin Moore, and Fr. Luis Condor.

According to the convent's Mother Superior Celina, the actor and his wife are wonderful and very humble people.

"He is very outspoken and a person easily to be liked, and he answered all of our questions about the movie. Some questions were asked by Sr. Lucy, who attended the meeting which lasted for about an hour, was always very alert following the conversation," she told Unity.

According to Unity, what the nuns or Lucia said about the movie is unknown and may never be known because statements by Lucia or, for that matter, any Carmelite nun anywhere in the world are always sent through the bishop or the Holy Father first.

Because of her power of influence, Lucia must be very careful what she says publicly since she is one of the possessors of the so-called "Third Secret of Fatima."

As a child, Sister Lucia and her friends Jacinta and Francisco saw the Virgin Mary in a series of apparitions.

While playing in a field outside the village of Fatima during World War I they saw a flash of light on top of a small evergreen tree. The light turned out to be the Virgin Mary, who asked that they come back on the 13th of each month for the next six months, at which times she would tell them who she was and what she wanted.

During the apparitions, the Virgin Mary made some prophecies, telling the children that if man did not stop offending God, a second great war would begin during the reign of Pope Pius XI. Twenty-Two years later, World War II broke out in Europe.

The Virgin Mary also warned that Russia, unless converted, would wreak havoc upon the world. This was before the rise of the Soviet Union.

Mary also confided to the girls the so-called Third Secret. The Secret was to be read by the pope in office in 1960 and then publicized. As it turned out, Pope John XXIII was the pope at that time who read the secret and decided to not reveal its contents.

The contents of the Third Secret were shared with John XXIII's successors. In June 2000, Pope John Paul II released the Third Secret.

The message, as recounted by Lucia, warned of tribulation for the world and persecution of the Catholic Church, including the shooting of the pope.

Some Church officials believe that the shooting of John Paul II in 1982 was a fulfilment of the prophecy, while others believe it has yet to be fulilled. Others wonder if the full details of the Third Secret have been revealed.

Asked in 1980 why the Secret had yet to be released, Pope John Paul II told a German audience:

"Because of the seriousness of its contents, in order not to encourage the worldwide power of Communism to carry out certain coups, my Predecessors in the Chair of Peter have diplomatically preferred to withhold its publication.

"On the other hand, it should be sufficient for all Christians to know this much: if there is a message in which it is said that the oceans will flood entire sections of the earth; that, from one moment to the other, millions of people will perish ... there is no longer any point in really wanting to publish this secret message.

"Many want to know merely out of curiosity, or because of their taste for sensationalism, but they forget that 'to know' implies for them a responsibility. It is dangerous to want to satisfy one's curiosity only, if one is convinced that we can do nothing aganst a catastrophe that has been predicted."

At this point, the Holy Father took hold of his Rosary and said: "Here is the remedy against the evil! Pray, pray and ask for nothing else. Put everything in the hands of the Mother of God!"

John Paul II continued: "We must be prepared to undergo great trials in the not-too-distant future; trials that will require us to be ready to give up even our lives, and a total gift of self to Christ and for Christ.

"Through your prayers and mine, it is possible to alleviate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert it, because it is only in this way that the Church can be effectively renewed. How many times, indeed, has the renewal of the Church been effected in blood? This time, again, it will not be otherwise.

"We must be strong, we must prepare ourselves, we must entrust ourselves to Christ and to His holy Mother, and we must be attentive, very attentive, to the prayer of the Rosary."

As a cloistered nun, Sister wouldn't have had any particular regard for an actor, not more than any other person.

I don't have any particular reason to believe she might have lied about the published version of what the 3rd secret was, so I don't believe she lied.

Here are the 3 secrets for those who haven't read them. Notice that the third secret doesn't at all correspond to the attempt on JP2's life, it is yet to be fulfilled:

The first part is the vision of hell. (seen in 1917, published 1943)

Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repulsive likeness to frightful and unknown animals, all black and transparent. This vision lasted but an instant. How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind heavenly Mother, who had already prepared us by promising, in the first Apparition, to take us to heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of fear and terror.

We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us so kindly and so sadly:

“You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one {WW2 - Hunker}will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world”.(7)

The third part of the secret revealed at the Cova da Iria-Fatima, on 13 July 1917.

I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so through his Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother and mine.

After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!'. And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White ‘we had the impression that it was the Holy Father'. Maybe the "3rd Secret" is that the "miracles" at Fatima were a hoax (the children could have 'made-up' seeing the Marian apparitions, and there is no objective evidence that the Sun did anything 'unusual' on the day in question).
