Re: My neighbor lady thieves my plants. What to do?
I had a new neighbor that decided she liked my plants and field stones from my rock garden and helped herself while I was away. So while she was away, I went over and dug up my plants & took my stones back. She hasn't said a word. I hope she got my point.

That is some bullshit !

Id walk over there and take my plants back, that would certainly send her a message.

Re: My neighbor lady thieves my plants. What to do?
I would go the Round up route. Get the big size that you pump and spray a nice stream. Buy it in a store far from your house.

choose a time she is gone. Spray every plant she has. Really drench them. Even the flower beds. Let her feel the loss of her plants. When she tells you about it...tell her how you understand...you hate it when your plants dissappear as well.

Infere it was perhaps a judgement from god. "THE SPIRITS" see all we do and sometimes they punish us. God is watching us! Be careful what you do!

Then make the sign of the cross and pretend you believe she is cursed. Act a bit scared and spooky.

No digging was done, no threats, just the plants she loved...and those she stole...suddenly drop dead. (round up takes a day or two).

Never admit anything...suggest she get a priest or preacher in there to bless the garden and the plants to drive out the evil spirits. Then make a comment about the blessings of a true and "honest" garden.

You could get a get a bottle of water and while she is watching...carefully pour a stream along your property line between your homes. Tell her it is a special blessed and holy water to keep evil out of your yard.

if you act the part well she will get the idea you either know she stole the plants or you will creep her out. At any rate she might leave you alone.

Keep the round up in the trunk of your car or dispose of it. If she comes snooping she would find it and know what happened.

It is important she gets no proof of anything that happens. The mystery will drive her nuts. Anyone she stole from will be suspect...not just you.

The dirt will allow replanting in a few days and she can start over and buy plants. If she takes any more...hit them with round up until she gets the idea that stolen plants are cursed.

Enjoy the show.

Re: My neighbor lady thieves my plants. What to do?
This is just completely weird. I have heard of it but thankfully never had it happen before and I am not sure how I would react honestly. On one hand stealing is stealing. On the other you can't just figure she needed it because its just a plant. I do know for habitual thieves the rush of it becomes like an addiction and a lot of times that's why what they are stealing makes no sense to someone who doesn't do it.

I think if it was me I would go over dig up my plant and be on my way. I can say this though if I EVER caught her in the act I would scare her bad enough she wouldn't ever want to step in my yard again lol.

Stealing your plants gives her power over what she considers a weaker person, IE you.

Will the police do anything.

Oh, this is NOT the first time this has happened. She scours people's yard for things she wants and TAKES them. She digs up our plants or snips them off down to the nub.

I want to be "nice", and not really create a scene.

I have helped her a great deal, but this is getting to be too much.

Thanks so much for your help!

So, this happens all the time. Yesterday while I was gone to the store, she came over here with a shovel and dug up my brand new, blooming hibiscus! I walked over there this morning, and lo and behold, it is planted in her yard.

Any suggestions?
 Quoting: WishinForTheMission

more information is needed. do you have a fence? is this just a regular neighborhood...a mobile home park or a development with covenants? do you have keep out and/or no trespassing signs up? does she have mental issues or is she just plain crazy? does she have other relatives living with her? first thing is find the non emergency telephone number for police in your area and start there. maybe try a visible fake security camera and look online or local security stores for fake security signs and/or stickers that warn of 24 hr video surveillance.

 Quoting: eatinmraw 61351661

Well, I do not know why MORE information, but... NO, there is no fence. Yet, still the plant is in MY yard, as I planted it there. LOL I do not have signs either, but she has to come a good way over AND with a shovel to boot to dig up my little plant. There are really no covenants here except for the one she should already know, and that is thou shalt not creep into your neighbor's yard while she is gone and steal plants and whatever else you think you might see. LOL She also picked some of my blooming zinnia's and then took the seed heads for herself, as ALL my zinnia's were gone too.

She has her boyfriend living with her, none of her relatives. I do not think she has mental issues either. Just perhaps clepto issues.

Perhaps security cams then. I will check on getting signs too, thanks.

It won't work. I had one neighbor that kept coming onto my yard. He always wanted something. Tried to buy my property for 1000 dollars. When he thought I had too many cars he wanted me to sell him one of those too. I'd put signs up on the edge of my yard saying keep out. I pointed them right at his house. He'd just kick the sign over and come over. Nothing works with these people unless you get violent with them.

You may not like him but he is right. I noticed it years ago that you could just not trust anybody anymore.

Okay then read "Nasty People" - Very short book.
A book about Invalidators (IE toxic manipulators)which is your neighbor. I gave it to a friend of mine and he said it changed his life. His father was very abusive and one of these people and after reading suddenly he understood everything that had happened in his family.

Also Toxic People is also a good book about the deflated and weakend Ego people that have to screw everybody around them to feel better about themselves. They are everywhere these days.

Re: My neighbor lady thieves my plants. What to do?
You've had some pretty good suggestions, such as the motion activated sprinkler (my personal vote) and so on.

Another thing you could do, is go to a local nursery (not a commercial greenhouse) and see if you could buy some blank shrub markers-either the copper or hard plastic ones. I'd use the kind that you take the tail, wrap around the stem, and pull through to tighten...I am sure you know what kind I mean ;) Put your name and planting date on them, and put them down snug at the soil surface. Most people never bother to remove those for years...and it's one way to establish it is your plant.

I understand the reluctance to face off a neighbor-after all, you live there and we do not. It is never a good thing to be in an adversarial situation, true? That said, I do think there may be a work around ;)

I am pretty sure you are not the only victim in the area. Some other neighbors are missing plantings as well. Find them, and as a small group....pay a friendly visit. Using the "we" with back up, will make a better impact than just mentioning the thefts in casual conversation. It will serve to embarrass the thief, for sure. And typically, that is a very good deterrent indeed.

Good luck!

What is with all this goody-two-shoes being "nice" or "tactful" with a lowdown THIEF???

Newsflash: She never was your friend. You are her prey.

She is gloating over what a pushover allows her to brazenly steal in the open from you.

Just watch. Pretty soon she'll have some nice young male relatives move in with her and steal every damned thing you've got.

Including burglary if you are lucky, home invasion if you aren't.

She already knows you are a perfect target.

THIEVES need to be dealt with firmly and legally.

Make a police report. This starts the paper trail. Contact your homeowner's insurance agent and ask his or her advice on preventing further theft. It will probably include motion activated security lights and cameras. The expense is worth it.

Do not contact the thief. Wait until she contacts you. Tell her in simple English that she is not to call you or to set foot on your property again. Ever. Advise her that you have already made a police report, and that you will record all attempts she makes to contact you or come near your property.

Firm. Clear. Relentless.

Quit being a victim. Unless you get some "soft hearted" sort of satisfaction out of being "nice" to thieves.

Cold, legalistic, and self-respecting LAY DOWN the LAW time! Grow a spine, and live up to it.

Or...you could also get one of those automatic flood lights...a super crazy bright one...lol! Thieves don't like being flooded with light like that. Plus, if you are inside and see the light go on you know there's at least something lurking in the dark out there. Added with a cheap security cam you just might get a good laugh! They key is to try to make it not a big deal...just a game of cat and mouse I suppose.

I always love your posts.hf

I am not relentless. That does not describe me at all.

While my so~called friend/neighbor is a plant (yard) thief, I don't think she is ruthless enough to try and break in my place.

Clearly, she is troubled. There is much to the story of her that I have not told here.

One of the other neighbors went away for the summer, and allowed the plant thief to house~sit to tend to the pool. As I understand, the plant thief was also a silver thief, and stole various real silverware items and pawned them. I do not think the police have been contacted regarding this either.

Although, no matter the circumstances, I do like to be diplomatic and forgiving. (as seen in almost all my posts here) It takes more of a spine to forgive completely, and to react with tact than it does to be nasty, cold, and hasty. Everything we do and how we react to people and situations reflects character. I have the patience of Job.......

Thanks.

I don't mind writing slang on internet, but if this were a letter or professional correspondence then I would make sure I used proper terminology. I always loved English in college, and writing papers one of my most favorite things; although, it was not my major.

My neighbor has some serious issues with boundaries...... ALL boundaries...... indeed.
