(OP) User ID: 64988567 Russia 11/10/2014 09:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I work in the oil sands and carry a personal H2S below my chin all day at work. If you can smell the Hydrogen Sulphide that's a good thing. It's when you can't smell it anymore is when it's bad! Quoting: Edgenation Thank you for the reply. Do you actually carry that gas as an indicator with you? Or was it a gas detector? I am very worried about the air quality of our city, especially since I can't remember last time we had such a scent here. So many ill and old people in town who I am very worried about right now. They are now recommending filtrating masks, or a wet cloth if one is to leave their home. Shelter in home declared in all of Moscow. At least until tomorrow, the high pressure ridge will get stronger at night. We might get some rain tomorrow, that will remove the bad pollution from our air. Update. Now Zelenograd is reporting this sulphury smell. To the point of discomfort in the pulmonary system. Still a mystery what could have "farted" so loudly. This is a very good event from one point though. All the 20+ million people in Moscow noticed and got their heads up from tablets and phones. Kind of a unifying experience. Anonymous Coward User ID: 25066662 United States 11/10/2014 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | H2S is mega bad stuff. It's highly soluble in water, so if you wet a t-shirt and breath through it most of it will be removed. If you use slightly soapy water it will raise the pH a bit and make it more effective. Be careful, H2S has a strong odor initially, but it quickly deadens your sense of smell so you may think that it's gone but it's not. |

Possible spillage from the Moscow Oil Processing Plant in Kapotnya District. Experts are looking for the cause of this pillage and smell. Quoting: Snuffielover Wonderful and useless advice to "Open Windows Wide to air out your room." heard on the radio right now. I'd say tape the windows and airways shut and turn on the car air-re-circulation for those caught in the evening traffic jams. Another update coming in just now is that the gas spillage comes from the Ljublino District. Information keeps getting updated rapidly. The winds are Southerly today, and this huge pollution cloud will probably spread itself over my town pretty soon. Here is the only news item I could find of this. [link to www.m24.ru] The Experts are still uncertain where exactly this spillage came from. I remind you that Hydrogen Sulfide is a Class 4 Health Hazard with even short exposures being deadly. Update. The concentrations of Styrene and Formaldehyde have been double, or five times the safe values from early night tonight in several of Moscow's regions. Not very healthy either. What are your thoughts abut this whole situation? The EMERCOM of Russia is currently telling Moscow's populace that "it is not dangerous. Please be calm." When such an event has not been heard of here in Moscow for at least ten years. Darn Government Officials. This horrible smell has now wafted over our town as I predicted. This unmistakable smell of rotten eggs is spreading wider still. Might be this high pressure ridge enchanting the Iceland's Volcano SO2 releases perhaps? Still a mystery to where the source comes from! hydrogen sulfide is deadly do not air youtr house with h2s. |

(OP) User ID: 64988567 Russia 11/10/2014 11:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Is this confirmed as an industrial spill, or are there volcanoes nearby that you should be concerned about? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59245951 There are no volcanoes, which I am aware about around Moscow. The video above illustrates how smoggy that "release" was. To cover such a large area, I'd say the release was substantial. The main suspects are the Moscow Oil Refinery as well as the sewage aeration plant. About four thousand six hundred square kilometers(1892sq. miles) of urban + suburban land was covered judging by the huge response from the people reporting it from Zelenograd to Podolsk. According to this article [link to www.m24.ru] our EMERCOM services blame the Moscow Refinery, while the Refinery reports of "No noticeable Malfunctions". Please keep in mind our Government has lousy communication. I bet this surfaced after many people reported of an emergency gas dump at the plant. Which is rather hard to overlook if you ask me. Events such as this are usually hushed, if they haven't taken lives directly. I have no doubt the mortality rate will spike greatly after this spillage. As it did when we had the peatbog fires covering the area with smoke in 2010. Luckily the smell has subsided here, but I am getting a very annoying headache. What annoys me the most is the darn expert reply. Most of them gave contradicting advice. Such as open all windows and walk outside (into the cloud of deadly gas). That was the information for those first three hours, until I called the Moscow radio station and told them that windows should be barred up and cars should recycle their air in traffic jams. After that tons of people started to do that by the following people who called in from jams, reporting how the smell got into their cars even with ventilation shut off / recycling. The (my) word "recycling" was heard like a thousand times in the hours after I called. In the event of a large, deliberate gas attack Moscow is DooMed! And it will spread all over the region, with millions of casualties. At least by the current weak response I noticed today. This unmistakable smell of rotten eggs is spreading wider still. Might be this high pressure ridge enchanting the Iceland's Volcano SO2 releases perhaps? Still a mystery to where the source comes from! that link above, Google Translated.. In many parts of the capital in the morning there is a bad smell, like hydrogen sulfide. This is reported by readers M24.ru. "In the center of Moscow Taganka very strong smell of gas. Mosgaz called in. They said that on this occasion calls received many causes of smell, they do not know," - says Natalia reader. "Many residents of Moscow, especially the south and south-east, concerned with the question: what is that smell of gas or something like standing in the morning in the air? Nowhere have no information. I am from Biryuleva-East, barely survived in the morning (I'm allergic, asthmatic ). In the afternoon the same smell is felt in the area of "Paveletskaya". Please check what's happening, tell us the news, "- said Larissa. "In the south and southwest felt a strong smell. Whether ammonia, or sewer ...", - said Andrey. "Taganka district near the metro station" Proletarian "and" Peasant Zastava "reeks of gas still in the early morning," - said Olga. In addition, there is a bad smell in the metro area "Novokuznetsk", 5th Street Yamskogo Fields, 1st Tverskaya street. In the metropolitan emergency department M24.ru reported that the agency establishes the causes of bad breath. In complex urban M24.ru reported that the smell is not associated with the work of the housing and communal services of the city. As reported by "Interfax" a source in the emergency services of the city, on the Moscow Oil Refinery was directed monitoring group. "Seeing verification process cycle and the state of the filters. However, it is to identify any accidents, as well as the source of the smell, it was not possible," - said the source. |

(OP) User ID: 64988567 Russia 11/10/2014 11:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you! I do hope some heads will roll for exposing our capital for such a thing. Won't get my hopes up too high though. This system is highly corrupt. Usually they find a lower-ranking scapegoat to blame everything on. Another issue is all this secrecy as well as misinformation given. Any good advice besides wet rags to help neutralize Hydrogen Sulfide with the harmful effects it has on our bodies would be greatly appreciated! We do live in a dip, so I would guess there will be a higher concentration of this poison here. Just look at that video though, it was shot from a high-rise apartment building and you can see this deadly fog go up what, ten floors?! It may be written off as a viral cold as they usually do here, but I am telling you this release will surely have a very adverse effect on the health of our general populace. The only thing that could warm my heart in such a situation is that Mid to High-Level functionaries will be sure to note this gas as well. I doubt they sought shelter in bunkers today. Mister Putin is abroad in China right now, but I do hope his Environment Minister got a good dose of H2S! Maybe it will help him reconsider having Misc. factories as well as refineries within Moscow's borders! I don't want my city to turn into another Beijing! By the way even in Beijing for the international summit they shut down all the factories and car traffic to get a semblance of clear, blue skies! Another prospect I worry about is the sour, acid rains that will surely follow. Stripping our forests for plant life as well as poisoning our water / fishing reservoirs. We have wonderful ducks in a small lake nearby, I'd hate to see them go. I am usually not this "green", but it's hard to stay neutral when you know all of this will have a hugely compounded negative effect down the line. Sulfuric Acid ruins your water, plants, hair, as well as any clothes people have hanging outside. My tomatoes are in, figuratively. They were harvested in early September. A couple of 200mg Ibuprofen pills for my headache, and I should be good to go to keep on top of this. Reporters telling of people not buying up every protection device possible in the pharmacies. Which I find strange personally. I have a mask, or ten nearby and our neighbor has a lot of filtering gas masks from the Soviet times I hope are still functional. The radio hosts are saying that little have changed since the Ukrainian SSR First Of May demonstration in Pripyat. The same dumb silence from officials, responsible for such things. Radio hosts mention the fear of responsibility that officials have now. Nobody wishes to get on air and tell people of an extreme situation.
