[ link to upi.com] FBI to probe computer data loss CHICAGO, July 25 (UPI) -- A Chicago workers' compensation claims firm reportedly has lost track of a personal computer containing the claims of about 500,000 New Yorkers. Newsday reports the lost claims made to a special fund contain private data including Social Security numbers of the claimants. The report said the claims management firm lost track of the computer in May while installing software for a private insurer-and-employer group handling two types of claims under New York state law. The company has called in the FBI to investigate the disappearance, the report said. The firm also has written to those whose data was lost that it would provide free credit monitoring for one year to stop any possible identity theft and $25,000 in identity-theft insurance. A company spokesman was quoted as saying there was no indication that anyone had misused the missing data. |
