At the end of life, high-pressure sodium lamps (standard streetlamps) exhibit a phenomenon known as cycling, which is caused by a loss of sodium in the arc. As a result, these lamps can be started at a relatively low voltage, but, as they heat up during operation, the internal gas pressure within the arc tube rises, and more and more voltage is required to maintain the arc discharge. As a lamp gets older, the maintaining voltage for the arc eventually rises to exceed the maximum voltage output by the electrical ballast. As the lamp heats to this point, the arc fails, and the lamp goes out. Eventually, with the arc extinguished, the lamp cools down again, the gas pressure in the arc tube is reduced, and the ballast can once again cause the arc to strike. The effect of this is that the lamp glows for a while and then goes out, typically starting at a pure or bluish white then moving to a red-orange before going out.

This happens to everyone because it happens eventually to ALL streetlights. It is NOT a phenomenon, but it is a psychological condition to believe you are causing it.

We are talking about walking or driving under a street lamp and it going out then coming back on when you get distance from it.

Look on you tube there is videos of ppl doing it over and over to rule out coincidence. We know ppl put off electricity and that the heart holds a charge. It's not crazy to see it manifest in some ppl in a way that would cause electrical inference.

Yeahhh, if I hadn't been my sister's personal Circus Monkey, I don't know when I would've noticed, or started paying attention, even.

It's something though.

I'd like to add that there were 2 lights in particular that this would happen with -as a youth annd I think my interstate stories were the same ones as well..So there may be something going on with those lamps as in faulty etc that makes them more susceptible?

Yes I think that is how it works. The weak lamps are more susceptible because they can't maintain a constant strong flowing current to beat off the interference some ppl cause the lamps to experience. Most ppl just assume it's the lamp flickering out on its own and sometimes it is.

So it actually a combination of what I responded to and the phenomenon of some ppl's ability to interfere with electronics.
