Rev 18 describes this very evil entity as being full of blasphemes, murdering people with her potions (sorceries).

One industry that I can think of that is full of blasphemes is the movie industry.

Seems there is no movie today without the obligatory taking God's name in vain; even children's movies.

She has so much power, she controls kings of the earth, and not vice versa.

Rev 17:18 ..(she)..reigneth over the kings of the earth.

But, a new generations of kings is about to rise, and she has no influence over them, as a matter of fact they despise her.

It's important to note that "The phrase “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT” appears only once in the Bible. It is in Revelation 17:5: “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”...

Who or what is this mystery that is written in all capital letters in many English Bibles? Does God’s Word reveal the answer?

Although I do not agree with the authors conclusions - he draws attention to several attributes of mystery babylon, that are worth going over.

In Zechariah 5:9-11 she is taken in a basket by storks, to shinar (Babylon is known as 'the land of Shinar') - this is where mystery babylon begins.

I think it most likely denotes (symbolically) the place of her birth.

Does she stay there?

Probably not - As an 'adult' we see her on a beast with 10 horns and 7 heads.

Therefore, she's an offspring of babylon(shinar) -

Hence reference to her as the daughter of babylon - Isaiah 47

Her merchants are harlots - just like she is.

Rev 18

3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

Taken from the commentary:

She is also called “THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS” (verse 5), meaning that other harlots have come from her. The “waters” that the harlot sits on (mentioned in verse 1) are explained in verse 15 to be “peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.”

Where I differ from the author of this commentary - is taking the the book of Revelation literally.

When it says "all nations" - it means every nation on earth:

Furthermore, this is an end times entity and not ancient.

Therefore, it can't be the roman Catholic church, because it has no influence in muslim countries.

Since we aren't there yet - and I say this tongue in cheek:

if after the gog magog war - the pope turns out to be the antichrist; then it's possible for the catholic church to weld power over all nations.

Before the destruction of mystery babylon

God urges the people who have partaken of her sins to separate themselves from her influence:

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

It's not clear exactly what is going on here.

It is a disaster of some sort!!

For example - the san andreas fault - where people are told to leave then entire coastal region!!

I'm assuming this (city) mystery babylon apparently is located close to ports where a great deal of merchandise is exported and imported...

So there are huge clues as to who mystery babylon is:

Is the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Is decadent

If destroyed would cause a global economic meltdown

Ports can handle many container ships

Great men of the earth were willing to deceive everyone while benefiting financially from her potions:
