I've been posting on Kilauea Volcano; yesterday on the radio we got a warning about Mauna Loa. . Mauna Loa has a giant caldera, I think my friend just told me the other day it's boiling lava, 6x15 miles wide. . There has been earthquakes, and lava rising in it lately. . Mauna Loa is over 13,000 feet tall; in other words, it can flow down and cover most of the island, nobody lives above it: the only things higher than Mauna Loa in the Hawaiian Islands, are a few observatories on Mauna Kea. . I hope this thread dies with no news; but if it doesn't I'll keep you posted, God willing. . Last Edited by anonymous 007 on 09/16/2014 08:45 PM |

Its a shield volcano not very explosive, if it starts flowing it will just get higher could produce a lot of vog. |

Mauna Loa is where the EQ originated back in 1973(?) that caused 1/3 of the big island to actually move away a bit from the rest of the island.
Long Run Out Landsides as part of a Volcano's collapses into the sea are a typical feature of Island Cone Volcanoes ... and the Hawaiian Islands have experienced some very massive ones over their geologic history.
The 1973 EQ and split that occurred across the big island should give everyone pause as to the potential for that to happen in the future in Hawaii, though such an event could easily be 100,000 years in the future. The key to watch for though is volcanic activity and EQ's under the Mauna Loa volcano. |
