"Whatever Hipparcos has, it's junk," says Melis.

He says the findings also raises concerns about future data from Europe's new Gaia satellite which is based on Hipparcos technology, and will measure distances to almost a billion stars.


I work in the field and calling another team's data "junk"?

Ramifications?

The ESA’s new Gaia Space Telescope uses virtually the same technology and cost 1 billion dollars.

Gaia will observe 1 billion stars and other bodies and now those measurements will be suspect. It is a shame.
