Double mastectomy for breast cancer 'does not boost survival chances'
Women with breast cancer who opt for a double mastectomy to beat the disease do not increase their chances of survival, according to new research.

Having both breasts removed did not extend patients' lives any more than having cancerous lumps removed, followed by radiotherapy. The findings are based on a study of 189,734 women in California with the disease.

"We can now say that the average breast cancer patient who has bilateral mastectomy will have no better survival than the average patient who has lumpectomy plus radiation," said Dr Allison Kurian from Stanford University, the lead scientist for the project.

Ten years after having both breasts removed, 18.8% of women had died, compared with 16.8% of those who had a lumpectomy, then radiation. The paper was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The double mastectomy has been the subject of discussion in recent years after celebrities including Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, former X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne and singer Michelle Heaton underwent the procedure as a preventive measure against breast cancer.

Kurian warned women against losing both their breasts unnecessarily. "A mastectomy is a major procedure that can require significant recovery time and may entail breast reconstruction, whereas a lumpectomy is much less invasive, with a shorter recovery period," she added.

I'm a professional cynic but I think it was a double whammy for Jolie, she got to hang firm, ridiculously big boobs on her skeleton and got do it for 'health reasons', thus remaining on the path of sainthood. I mean, it would look as ultimate hypocrisy if Jolie, oh-so concerned with world peace and starving children, did something as profane as fix her boobs. Would not go with her Mother Angelina image at all. Although informed people will have realized that JoliePitts don't want for anything in their pampered-ass lives on account of their charitable work.

She got her knighthood, now i'm just waiting for the Pope to start beatification process for her while still living.

I just get a bad, creepy vibe about her, can't put a finger on it, but I got a feeling this newfangled Ms. goody two shoes image is just an act.

op soory for my offtopic bile fest ^^^^ ... twas a rather rude thing to do... hf

but regarding the news, i understand why it wouldn't improve your chances if you already have cancer but i wonder if that's true for women like above celebs, who have their breasts removed as preventitative measure BEFORE cancer develops. if you havent got real boobs there can't be cancer can it?

are health systems getting swamped by women demanding preventative mastectomies now when celebrities have done it?

Re: Double mastectomy for breast cancer 'does not boost survival chances'
After almost 40 years as a cancer researcher, Dr. Jones found, for example, that survival in breast cancer is 4 times longer without conventional treatment. he stated, "People who refused treatment lived for an average of 12-1/2 years. Those who accepted other kinds of treatment lived an average of only 3 years. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, radical surgery on cancer patients does more harm than good." She's a complete fake and the opposite of a humanitarian. Btw, doesn't she still have the image of a homewrecker and incestious drug addicted blood thirsty whore who does anything for fame and money? William Hague had to pay a price and step down after he did her the knighthood favor.

Listen, research those women who have lumpectomy WITHOUT radiation or chemo... they fare the very best! Why?

Radiation, long term, of itself kills- this is what they don't tell women!

It causes a myriad of other cancers after 10 yrs, and once you have died from those they remove you from breast cancer statistics...that's why radiation looks so good and is still the "standard of care ".

To every women with breast cancer, no Matter the stage and pathology - for God 's sake do your own research and don't blindly accept what every else has before you!
