Anonymous Coward User ID: 61942634 United States 09/02/2014 02:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Have you ever considered not shampooing your hair with hair products? Quoting: CowgirlK I know it sounds really crazy to not shampoo your hair with traditional products (shampoo and conditioner) but it really works. I didn't want to post anything until I tried it myself but I have been "Poo" free for 2 months now and I can say going poo free might have been one of the best decision I have ever made in my life. Let me preface this story with I have long hair. Really LONG hair, past my butt which I keep tied up in a sexy bun. I've spent lots of money on shampoo and conditioner in my life. I use 1/3 a bottle of conditioner ever time I wash my hair just to get the knots out. But not any more. Now I pour baking soda into a cup that I mix with water and create a slurry which I pour onto my roots. I scrub my hair as if I had shampoo in my hair...scrub, scrub, and rinse. It feels very weird but it works. My hair ends up squeaky clean. Then I mix apple cider vinegar with water, pour it over my hair, comb through and rinse. After my personal experiment I can say my hair has never felt so clean and soft in my life. And I'm not using any chemicals that are harming my body. My hair is healthier and more beautiful than ever. Has anyone else gone poo free? Lets Hear your story.... |

I haven't used shampoo in many years hair is almost to my thighs now. You have me curious about the vinegar rinse would probably do me some good because I have well water thats pretty hard. I don't do baking soda but I just use conditioner. Cheapy one for the first that I "wash" with and then a thicker more expensive one for the last. Works like a charm and my family thinks I'm crazy lol. None of them have long hair to deal with though. I'm afraid the baking soda would dry my hair out like straw because my hair just soaks up the right conditioners. Quoting: ByFaithAlone If a persons hair is oily they suggest using white vinegar for a rinse. If your hair tends to be dry, like those of us long haired folks, cider vinegar is the vinegar of choice. Dont be afraid...give it a try. If you don't want to go poo cold turkey, shampoo your hair with whatever you use but do cider vinegar as a rinse. Take a 16oz glass, pour a cup of cider vinegar in and add water to the top. Pull your hair to the side and dunk it into the cup. Hold it there for a couple of minutes, dump the vinegar on the rest of your hair, comb it through (I use one of those 4 tooth brushes) and rinse the vinegar out. You will be amazed at how easily it is to comb your hair and how soft your hair will be after it dries. Like I said in an earlier post, my 84 year old mother used nothing but vinegar to condition her hair back in the day. I'm so happy to have discovered that baking soda and vinegar are amazing hair products as well as wonderful general cleaning products too. If and when doom arrives, at the very least, if even for a short time, I will have a clean house and clean hair...lol |

I only use alberto vo5 on my hair. beeen doing it for 2 years now, and my hair is very long, but it's always been thin. then, shock of shocks, I looked really close at it this morning because I thought I had some bald patches. Nope, my hair is coming out silver grey...ALL OF IT. I have 1/2 inch of silver, grey and yellow roots interspersed with very few of my natural black/brown left. I mean, shit...what causes all your hair to turn grey at once? I have some stress, but it's not that bad. Quoting: Beverly Hills Ninja anyway, my hair is soft but maybe I'll try your method. I heard that castor oil thickens your hair. has anyone tried this? Give the baking soda/vinegar a try. PLEASE Don't do castor oil. When I was in my 20's I saw an old woman with the most beautiful white hair I had ever seen in my life. I asked her what her beauty secret was. She said she conditioned her hair with bacon grease. So I cooked up a pound of bacon, poured the grease in my hair, put a towel on my head and slept with the grease in my hair over night. I tried to wash the bacon grease out the next day without much success. Not only was my hair a stringy mess for weeks after the bacon experiment, buy creepy guys kept asking me out on dates because all men love the smell of bacon..lol Take it from a woman who has had long hair beautiful hair all of her life and has tried lots of crazy hair experiments, the baking soda/vinegar thing is amazing. Give it a try... Not sure it will make the hair grow back that's thinning though. It's getting quite thin. Maybe it's just all the product. I'll give it a try for a couple of months and see if any peach fuzz starts popping up. Otherwise it's hairclub time! Hubby can be bald, but not me. I refuse to have thin wispy hair when I spent all this time growing out to half way down my back. The grey I guess I can live with. It's a pretty brilliant silver anyway which is kind of nice. |

And yes, vinegar douche has been an accepted practice for many years, although I would not recommend it as a routine practice as it upsets the normal flora and fauna of a woman's system. A vinegar douche should only be considered if there is a bacterial issue. One would hope that the acidic nature of vinegar would correct and balance the PH of the intended area in order to correct the problem. I would highly recommend a vinegar rinse for hairy men and monkeys alike in order to attract a mating partner. The use of vinegar on body hair is probably a good idea as Women usually prefer a soft place to rest their heads if they are so inclined. Got any more questions about no poo? |

You are so correct. Women who use that crap under their arms are so much more prone to breast cancer. They put chemicals under their arms daily, directly on their lymph nodes and then wonder why then end up with lumps in their breasts. Salt rocks work great...no odor at all. And yes you will still sweat but that is a normal body function. Its part of eliminating toxins from your system. Now that I have gone poo free..I have almost totally eliminated all chemicals from my daily hygiene routine. Besides, I usually drink too much so I have to make up for it somewhere else in my body. Good health is a give and take..LOL |

Thank you for your post and testimony as to going shampoo free. I did not read the no poo thread on GLP but I wish I did. My whole journey started with a stinky dog and groomers wanting 200 bucks to give him a bath. I figured there had to be some sort of alternative to taking my Leonberger Micah to a groomer and having him fluffed for an outrageous amount of money. My dog bath research lead me to the idea of "no poo." I tested it on my dog first. I took a bucket full of baking soda water and dumped it on him, massaged it it and squirted him off with the hose. Then I filled the bucket with apple cider vinegar as a rinse. His long hair was so soft and he didn't stink any more. That lead me to the idea that if no poo works for the dog, It will probably work for me too. Now that I've been on this journey for a couple of months I'm trying to figure out why no one ever told me about this before. I guess it all boils down to Occam's razor - the simplest answer is most often correct. Forget all the fancy hair products for both man and beast. Baking soda and vinegar is all we need. |

How much baking soda and apple cider vinegar do you need to use per wash? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 54705353 Oh Hell yes..A 13.5 pound bag of baking soda from Costco is $5.72 Regular vinegar is $3.29 for 1.32 gallons. You need to use regular if you have oily hair. At Big Lots its $1.00 for 32oz of apple cider vinegar. How much per wash is hard to say. You need to mess around with the amounts depending on your hair. I have very long hair so I use about 1 cup of baking soda in a slurry to clean my scalp and roots. Then I use about a cup of cider vinegar mixed with water for a rinse. Once your hair gets adjusted to no chemicals you wont need to wash it every day. If I used the entire bag of baking soda and a bottle of vinegar in a month it would cost less than 5 dollars. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 62431743 Sweden 09/02/2014 05:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The first two weeks quitting shampoo was horrible. The hair looked soaked with grease. This is because average schampoo dry out the hair, messing up the bodys normal hair fat. Takes some weeks to restore that function. After that, as long as you wash it in water every other day, you have fresh, good looking natural hair. Doesn't smell. Some people put organic stuff in water for scent. Never tried that though. Looking back I consider it a crime towards myself putting all these chemicals on your body. For what reason? Someone makes a buck. |

It's good for using for dry skin after showers too. I've gone no poo btw for a long time.....actually no soaps either as I don't trust those either commercially, and I haven't had any real bad effects or been told I stink lol. I found actually that it was beneficial, I used to have these dark brown patches on my legs for a long time for example even when I'd shower, think it was eczema or something, but when I got rid of soap, one good scrub was all it took for it to be gone permanently. I think my body was reacting to the soap personally. No one is perfect. A babe before walking will first stumble and fall many times but NEVER gives up until he succeeds.
