Re: Volcano going off in Hawaii...
.
The flow advanced about 125 yards since yesterday.
.
A brush fire broke out along the highway, and burned some acerage; they spent the night getting it under control.
.
The flow is moving into a dryer area, from rainforest to a dry grassy area... we should be experiencing more fires; thank God for the rain on my side of the island! but we do have smokey air again today.
.
They have recommended that anybody with health problems that might need hospitilization, to move out of the affected areas... because if the flow crosses highway 130, traffic will be crawling along Railroad Avenue (it's a two lane dirt road right now); and if it crosses Railroad, they will need to drive at least another 50 extra miles to go from Pahoa to Hilo, via Chain of Craters Road, through Volcano... and back down the mountain: it's a 20 mile trip now.
.
That would be driving at about 35 mph.
.
In other words, the value of my land, 18 miles from Hilo.. is going up.

Approximatly 85 more yards since yesterday...
.
We still don't have any evacuations ordered; but according to Civil Defense, if you think you might need an ambulance, and you live on the other side of the flow from Hilo, move closer to town.
.
A few years ago my gf turned down $350,000 for her house, now houses near her are advertised for $100,000; they are listed all over the windows of real estate offices.
.
Bulldozers are clearing forest land by my house.
.
I bought land far from neighbors; soon, there will be new houses on every block.
.
They'll want to build nice big houses, and complain about my shack. They'll have community meetings to force me to hook up power lines instead of living off of solar panels, they'll pave my road, and cars will fly by my house even faster: they'll do all that just to raise their property values.
.
My taxes will go up. :(
.
And... I moved onto a dirt road in the country, to keep my pets safe from traffic!
.
There goes the neighborhood.
.

Re: Volcano going off in Hawaii...
.
The flow is about .6 of a mile from Apa'a Street.
.
Railroad Avenue and Beach Road are ready if the lava crosses Highway 130.
.
They decided to make Chain of Craters Road two lanes... in case the lava crosses the other roads; I can't believe they were even considering a one lane contra-flow road going from Pahoa to Volcano!
.
Can you imagine taking turns using a 20 mile road, carrying the traffic from one of our most populated districts?
.
A two lane highway will not be wide enough.
.
They have spent years widening Highway 130, and it's bumper to bumper for hours, two times a day... it's like driving a car on a train, and going 35 mph (if you're lucky), all the way home...

Hi Tiger,
.
The flow went a few miles from my house, but now it's flowing away from me.
.
If you look at a map, I live in Eden Roc, you can get an idea of how close the flow came to my house between June and September, and why I started a rant thread on NPR, for not broadcasting anything about the volcano until September...
.
It doesn't matter if people live in the path; everybody on the island will be effected.
.
People from Pahoa have been flooding the rental markets in Hilo.
.
They are offering so much money, that landlords were kicking out their month to month tenants, and moving in people from Pahoa.
.
Today the news said, We are under a state of emergency, so the law forbids profiteering; but once the state of emergency is cancelled, they can kick out anybody without a lease, our homeless population will grow; but it will be a lot of Hilo people on the streets...
.

Thank God I saw the major rent increases coming, moved out of Hilo 2 years ago, and began buying land.

After a break, the lava is flowing again... it advanced another 150 yards yesterday.
.
Cemetary Road is closed, and Apa'a Road will be closed at noon today... the transfer station should be moved by then.

70 yards from the nearest house... moving between 5 and 10 mph.
.
Considering all of the days it's moved 300 yards (look back in this thread)... I can't believe nobody has been evacuated.
.
They did release an evacuation watch; they will probably begin evacuations in the morning.

Hi F-BVFA,
.
I don't think Hilo will be in any danger from this flow... the ground level goes down a gradual slope to Keaau, then goes up again towards Hilo.
.
If the flow hits Pahoa... it could flow down steep hills into Lei Lani Estates (If it doesn't go there first), and down towards Sea View Estates, I'm surprised it didn't finish off Kalapana.
.
There is also a steep paved hill going down from Pahoa toward Kapoho and Nanawale... if it does flow towards Hilo, it will probably be diverted by the steeper drop toward the ocean through Hawaiian Shores, Hawaiian Beaches, and Paradise Park Estates...
.
Wven if it only crosses the highway between Hilo and Pahoa (probably the busiest highway on the island), and doesn't touch any houses... all of those neighborhoods could be commuting to Hilo on a four wheel drive road...
.
And if it crosses RailRoad Avenue... the road everybody would have to take has rocks so sharp, they flattened my four wheel drive in less than a half mile.
.

The flow hasn't moved in 5 days; but it's building up, swelling, and has breakout flows above the main flow...
.
It looks like it's going to be over 60 yards wide when it goes through Pahoa.
.
My Daughter had to move her PO Box from Pahoa, to share mine in Hilo.
.
She said, They sent the mail out of Pahoa, and it'll take her a couple weeks to get it.

The flow hasn't advanced; but it's gotten wider from lava continuing to flow into it.
.
A breakoutflow from upslope took out a house; but you've probably read that in the national media by now: so I'll tell you about how it's affecting life in the islands...
.
In my neighborhood I've heard 3 bulldozers going, (they bulldoze the jungle around me to the ground, killing every tree on their land; I'm clearing my land by hand, saving all of the native Hawaiian plants and trees, while bringing in more trees.) somebody already moved a big house onto one of the lots.
.
I'm thinkig about living on a boat.

300 more yards since yesterday. The path it chose sounds like people will be stopped within throwing distance of 3 highways, and not far from the fourth. The place it's supposed to hit, couldn't be picked better for a man with one bomb, who wanted to cut off Pahoa and four highways that junction there. 1.2 miles to go.

its great to hear from someone who is living in the area (in the path of the lava? Or right next to it?!)

Thank you for your regular updates, OP.

Also, the video abouce is scary/beautiful. (Scary = lava, beautiful = Hawaii).

I'm uphill from the flow, in a neighborhood that has whole houses moving into it from Pahoa and the subdivisions getting cut off all of a sudden.

Re: Volcano going off in Hawaii...
The flow still hasn't hit the shopping center or the road; but it's still active with upslope breakouts...

The lady who lived in the only house that the lava took out (The one we saw on the news...), had to sell me three of her pedigreed mini rex breeding bunnies for $100.

She had to move from that big grassy yard, to a lot filled with a'a.

A'a is a Hawaiian word that has been adopted into our English dictionary... a'a is a very self explanitory word, with an obvious definition; it's the sound you make when you have to walk on it without shoes.

Re: Volcano going off in Hawaii...

It seems like the volcano stopped a few yards from the shopping center.
.
The stores restocked their shelves and opened back up.
.
The latest Civil Defense announcement said, the volcano is flowing at the source again, instead of flowing miles away in Pahoa.
.
Only one house was destroyed; and she sold me 3 of her breeding mini rex pedigreed rabbits for $100. I paid $50 for a baby from another breeder a couple weeks earlier.
.
I use the bunnies to fertilize my yard, by putting them at the high ground and letting the rain wash their time released, triple 8, fertilizer pellets into my banana grove; and breed tiny show bunnies, because nobody can afford to pay $50 to eat a cute little bunny that dresses out to about a pound.
.
The best thing that came from this, is... they opened up the beach route, which they have been blocking with junk cars and giant rocks for the last 20 years. :)
