Volcano going off in Hawaii...

volcano season

A news source has an article up about a lava flow. I just googled "Hawaii volcano evacuation" and the article from some banned news source popped up. They also quote a guy as saying. "Weeks to months" but also only 5 days from populated areas, so no idea to actual threat level. But head on over to google or your community center.

I'm closer to the flow than most people on the map; but it seems to be going away from me; God bless the people in the path.

I remember when the lava coverd Kalapana... the last time I saw it, I thought of Sodom and Gomorah... road signs sticking up just above the ground and a concrete building filled with lava, etc.

I was on the flow at night when my flashlight died... all around me for a mile, was red hot lava glowing in cracks... it's only some small pieces of hardened crust, floating on lava.

And for the others, Hawaii is always flowing; but it's been years since a Civil Defence message warned anybody about a possible evacuation in a week or two... and it's headed toward Pahoa, the largest town in the Puna district: and if it crosses the highway, it can cut off a large portion of the island to traffic... thousands of people might need to move.

They have been flying over the flow in helicopters in the daytime; and the Civil Defence message said, "You can't see where the flow is going from any private property, it's in dense vegetation, flowing into a crack;" so they're warning everybody not to look for it, like Chip. lol

I'm pretty sure the camera is at the beginning of the flow, miles away from where the lava is flowing into the crack.

Royal Gardens subdivision.

I love this volcano.

Yeah, Royal Gardens... it came so slowly; but it went all the way to the ocean, added lots of land, covered the Queens Bath, killed the stream of water that filled the Keki Pond, and made just about the whole town homeless... it was such a beautiful place.

It's only a mile from the nearest neighborhood, moving at about a 100 yards a day...

On the news this morning I heard, they will probably upgrade it from a watch to a warning tomarrow or the next day, and shut off the sub-division to anybody who isn't a resident...

The volcano is less than a mile from the closest neighborhood, moving 800 feet a day, and should be in the nearest subdivision within the week, if it doesn't stop to fill another crack...

There is supposed to be a meeting at the Pahoa High School cafeteria tonight at 6:30, they think it could hit there later... I'm not going; but I should know more tomarrow.

My friend in Paradise Park is worried that if it hits Pahoa, it will flow downhill towards him, in the north... the radio has stated that Lei Lani Estates could get hit: Lei Lani Estates is South of Pahoa...

If everybody's right... it seems like that could displace 100,000,000 people: that's most of Puna district.

If it hits Paradise Park, the only way out for almost the whole disrtrict would be an old four wheel drive farm road along the shore, that people have been blocking with junk cars and bulldozers for years... it also goes through an ancient Hawaiian (KAPU! STAY IN YOUR CAR AND KEEP MOVING!) graveyard).

The best (not the most scenic) part of that road, is when it runs through the landfill.

They put in a mobile cam down near the bottom end of the flow.
It's not live-streaming tho.

How far is this from Hilo?

I mean Pahoa
and the Puna district.

If you mean the distance from Pahoa to Hilo, its about 20 miles/32km away.

The mayor declared an emergency and upgraded the watch to a warning.

Since yesterday the volcano flow moved 820-830 feet closer to the Kaole Homested... they say it's moving in the cracks again...

Non-residents of the Homestead are not allowed into it anymore.
They still aren't issuing evacuations though.

I don't think Hilo will be in any danger from this flow... the ground level goes down a gradual slope to Keaau, then goes up again towards Hilo.

If the flow hits Pahoa... it could flow down steep hills into Lei Lani Estates (If it doesn't go there first), and down towards Sea View Estates, I'm surprised it didn't finish off Kalapana.
.
There is also a steep paved hill going down from Pahoa toward Kapoho and Nanawale... if it does flow towards Hilo, it will probably be diverted by the steeper drop toward the ocean through Hawaiian Shores, Hawaiian Beaches, and Paradise Park Estates...
.
Wven if it only crosses the highway between Hilo and Pahoa (probably the busiest highway on the island), and doesn't touch any houses... all of those neighborhoods could be commuting to Hilo on a four wheel drive road...
.
And if it crosses RailRoad Avenue... the road everybody would have to take has rocks so sharp, they flattened my four wheel drive in less than a half mile.
