Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 51311176 United States 08/17/2014 06:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | To date, Captain Moore has conducted ocean and coastal sampling for plastic fragments through more than 40,000 miles of the North Pacific Ocean, across 22 degrees of latitude and 70 degrees of longitude. His latest 10,000 mile voyage took him and his crew two-thirds of the way to Japan across the International Dateline. Captain Moore's work has been highlighted in numerous major media outlets, including ABC’s Nightline, Good Morning America, National Public Radio, Rolling Stone, and The Wall Street Journal. In June 2012, Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, Canada, bestowed Captain Moore with a well earned Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa. His work has been published in multiple scientific journals and magazines. His first book, Plastic Ocean, was published in October 2011 and is soon to be published in Japanese and Italian. I didn't hear anything like that in the video. And do we all understand that this is not like a big island or land mass, rather an massive area in the pacific where the Tides bring all of this debris into that large zone. much of the trash, as described to me by my sister and husband that sail, lingers just on or below the surface, bobbing in the water. Sadly I do not have an answer for this. Money is not the answer to this, perhaps nothing but Time will answer this. Yet I am not so naive as to think that every action each of us does in our lives can have either positive or negative consequences. I love you. |

I refuse to watch any video about the harm we are doing to the planet because it is ALWAYS the same propaganda and three conclusions by the end of the videos/documentary. 1)Humans are evil and need to basically be wiped from the planet 2)Humans are destroying every living ecosystem on the planet and need to be destroyed 3)Humans need to give all of there money to an environmental organization that will end up giving half of the money away to the corporate shitheads in charge of the organization so they can live in there gigantic mansions that use more energy and resources than 98% of American households. Quoting: Goofy for God Captain Charles Moore and his team of scientists from the Algalita Marine Research Institute have been researching the patch for two months. He first discovered it in 1997. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 51311176 United States 08/17/2014 07:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Marine Debris Any kind of trash can get into the ocean—from glass bottles to aluminum cans to medical waste. The vast majority of marine debris, however, is plastic. Scientists have collected up to 750,000 bits of plastic in a single square kilometer (or 1.9 million bits per square mile) of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Plastic products can be very harmful to marine life in the gyre. For instance, loggerhead sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, their favorite food. And many marine mammals and birds, such as albatrosses, have become strangled by the plastic rings used to hold six-packs of soda together. Marine debris can also disturb marine food webs in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. As microplastics and other trash collect on the surface of the ocean, they block sunlight from reaching plankton and algae below. Algae and plankton are the most common autotrophs in the marine food web. Autotrophs are organisms that can produce their own nutrients from oxygen, carbon, and sunlight. If algae and plankton communities are threatened, the entire food web may change. Animals such as fish and turtles that feed on algae and plankton will have less food. If those animals start to die, there will be less food for predator species such as tuna, sharks, and whales. [link to education.nationalgeographic.com] |
