The volcanic system is 200 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide. The central volcano has a seventy square kilometer caldera that is ten kilometers across. Technically it is a highly complex type of volcano that is a mixture between a shield volcano, a strato volcano, tuya formations, volcanic ridges, radial volcanic fissures and a truly astounding volcanic fissure swarm extending in a NNE/SSW direction out from the central volcano. The largest effusive eruptions has come from the fissure swarm where the Thjorsahraun is the largest lava eruption on the planet in the last 10 000 years. The largest explosive eruption occurred in 1477 during the Veidivötn basalt flood eruption in the southern part of the fissure swarm. During that eruption a VEI-6 explosive eruption occurred in the caldera that was the largest explosive eruption in Iceland since Grimsvötn suffered another VEI-6 almost 10 000 years ago. The 1477 eruption is the largest explosive eruption in Iceland since settlement and also the second largest effusive eruption only bested by the Lakí eruption. I think I just set a new record in using the word “largest” in a single paragraph. Bárdarbunga is understudied since very little was known about the volcano until satellite imagery revealed the true scale. The reason behind this is a combination between it being remote, it having had small and benign eruptions for the last 537 years. The small scale of the eruptions are probably due to damages to the volcanic chamber system in the caldera after the large explosive eruption in 1477. The last reason is that the entire volcano is covered in ice completely. The last confirmed eruption in Bárdarbunga occurred in 1996 during the Gjálp eruption. That eruption was a short duration VEI-2 eruption with a 3.5km high eruption column. It is also possible that the entire Gjálp eruption was a radial fissure eruption from Bárdarbunga and that Grimsvötn erroneously had that eruption attributed to it. The jury is out on that one. Bárdarbunga is also by far the most seismically active of the volcanoes on Iceland. Not in numbers, that is the Gódabunga Cryptodome near Katla Volcano, but in the amount of Cumulative Seismic Release. CSR is the same as the amount of earthquake energy released over time. ... During all last week (Week 33) there has been a minor earthquake swarm in Bárðarbunga volcano. No other activity followed this minor earthquake activity during the week until last night (16-August-2014). During the night (around 02:20 UTC) a harmonic tremor started to appear on SIL stations around Bárðarbunga volcano. Following the appearance of the harmonic tremor earthquake activity started around 03:30 UTC. Largest earthquakes in this swarm have magnitude around 3,0 so far. Depth is around 5 to 10 km. During the night the earthquake swarm moved around in the volcano and is now more east then it first started. According to Rúv news the glacier around this part of Vatnajökull glacier is around 700 meters thick, so it going to take a major eruption to break the ice. This however also means that when a glacier flood starts in this area there is a high risk that is going to be large. Currently the activity in Bárðabunga volcano is not stable, it does fluctuate a little. Besides this minor fluctuation it seems stable. Based on harmonic tremor signal and its range this does not appear to be a large eruption so far. That might change without warning. I do however expect larger earthquakes before any major volcano eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano. What seems to have happened is that a dike intrusion got to the surface and started this eruption, even if it is just small one at current time. I am going to post update soon as more information gets available. This situation is going to change quickly and without much warning. [link to www.jonfr.com] |

But we will see. I will be back with updates. Need time to asses the evidence. I do not expect “breaking news”, it may build up slowly and take a day or to to show on “top surface” (Glacier is 700 m thick) [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

That’s my gut. But I think this is the run-up towards an eruption sometime in soon, could be this week, this month, this year or next few years at latest. Or maybe this is already a minor eruption taking place under the thick ice. It wouldn’t be the first time we wouldn’t be sure, and that it is actually taken place already under Vatnajokull. Trouble is we do not know very well how Bardarbunga behaves, and even the well known Grimsvotn seems to surprise us too. Well, the run-ups in different volcanoes are very different. Compare 3 or 4 quakes in Hekla leading to its eruption in 2000 (a quite silent sneaky volcano), with a similar situation to today’s when Fimmvorduhals-Eyjafjallajokull was about to erupt ( [link to www.mbl.is] (but remember the first eruption was a tiny fissure at VEI1), to several green stars for the 2011 VEI4 eruption of Grimsvotn, a swarm of quakes that came out of the blue ( [link to thetruthbehindthescenes.files.wordpress.com] and to a similar situation in Katla (several green stars), but in the context of continuous swarms over time, and no eruption took place ( [link to modernsurvivalblog.com] A VEI1 to VEI2 could already be occuring under the ice. Or maybe this is the prelude to a larger eruption in soon. If the eruption is a VEI1 or even a minor VEI2, then it could be remain hidden under the ice. And even melted water could only flood some weeks later. So we would never suspect an eruption, like it happen with Katla and Hamarinn in July 2011. [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |
