I'm just a social browser and a few youtube vids, what the hell is going on with hughesnet?

It's a joke. Their rolling bandwidth counter left me throttled for weeks at a time.

Wildblue was better, but only slightly.

Finally, I went with a vz mifi. The data limits and costs are similar, but the performance is far better than satellite.

Videos will quickly burn thru your data allowance. I switch back and forth from a 10G plan to a 15G plan whenever the plan I'm on gets throttled. It's cheaper than buying tokens. I try to watch videos before 8 am.

How much does that HughesNet cost?

I just upgraded my cable modem to DOCSYS3 and am getting 56MB DL and 6MB up.

350 Gig/month.(and sometimes I go over LOL)

yes it does suck when you are stuck with Hughes Net ... no doubt all of their customers are Victims of no other service available ...

by far they are the biggest rip off I have ever encountered

they SAY that you are getting so many gigs of "allowance" but half of your "minutes" are between 2AM and 8AM in the morning - like we are all up then ... NOT

I started out with their medium service package - it was 65$ per month - which rapidly grew to $97 a month ... because I couldn't get enough download time to even watch YOUtube vids for the month ... the speed is ok - not real consistant, so I switched to GEN 4 for more download times ... I paid for my original modem which they replace with their GEN4 one, and they charge me ten buck a month for it - and gave me NO credit for the one they stole ... they told me the up grade would not effect my "membership" but when I tried repeatedly to get out of my contract they keep telling me I haven't been with them for two years ... when June was my THIRD YEAR ...

the "tokens" are not cheap $5 won't even get you a full movie ... I'm good for about three weeks, but that last week of every month is a fucking nightmare, I hate Hughes Net, Verizon, and Century Link - and take every opportunity I can to bad mouth these rip off artists ... may they all go backrupt - and may all their employees go under with them -

We live out in the country and there aren't many options here. We had Hughesnet for about two months and decided to get rid of it for the exact reasons you mentioned. We were buying tokens every 2 or 3 days and it would've been even sooner if we had watched Netflix or youtube. They did give you extra GB's at night, but who the hell wants to stay up between 2 and 8 AM?

The wifi we have now isn't the greatest. Sometimes every thing comes in and other times pages won't load or come in all scrambled. It's still better than Hugesnet and at least we can watch Netflix and Youtube as much as we want as long as it's coming in. It's the lesser of the two evils anyway.

That's ridiculous for them to restrict your viewing that way...good for you in reporting this to the unwashed masses.

My brother and niece both have this rotten satellite TV. There are new players on the block for rural viewers though, with microwave internet. It is relatively inexpensive and fast. They are call "last mile" providers, according to my provider. I am using it in town here and really like it, much cheaper than cable internet. Hoping we can get it to my brother's area.

Maybe you can do a little research and find a wireless internet service provider like this company. They told me they are expanding into Virginia, if that will help.
