REAL timeline of Brantly's family's exposure to Ebola?
I have read a number of the Ebola threads here, and have never seen this question either asked, or answered.

It has been stated that Brantly started feeling ill on Wed. and thought it was malaria.

The diagnosis of Ebola was not made until Sat.

PRESUMING it is true (although many reports state that this may not be) that one is only contagious when the symptoms start, God knows how many people he infected between Wed and Sat.....

But by all reports, Amber Brantly and children flew out only a "few days before he was DIAGNOSED with Ebola". Does that mean they were still there when he thought he had malaria?

Exactly WHAT DAY did they fly out? Has that question been answered?

If they're only being "monitored", and not quarantined... this really COULD get ugly....

EVEN IF they flew out the day his symptoms started, they would not have been contagious. Here you have a supposed family, 1000 times more knowledgable about the precautions to take than somebody like me...and so I cannot see this family ever starting a pandemic.

However, what about the daily planes coming in with passengers who are not the family of ebola doctors? Should you be looking at what their right hand is doing when it's the left you should be worried about?

OP, I've been looking for solid info on the Brantly family time line also.
He is the most detailed article I have found, and it is not at all clear.
Very frightening that those who are taking extreme cautions are contracting the disease.

various snips:

A doctor from Texas is in grave condition and terrified for his life after he contracted the incurable Ebola virus he was treating in West Africa, colleagues said Monday.

Dr. Kent Brantley, 33, is one of two Americans in the region who have contracted the deadly disease, which has now killed nearly 700 people in West Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

The father of two had been treating Ebola victims in Monrovia, Liberia, when he began to notice symptoms related to the virus, CBS reports.

He also requested that people send their prayers and well-wishes to Nancy Writebol, his co-worker at the hospital and second American doctor to contract the disease in Liberia.

But as the Ebola virus began to sweep through Guinea and into Liberia, Brantly and his wife, Amber, began to question whether they should remain in Africa with their two children, ages 3 and 5.

Instead of fleeing, the family decided to stay and help fight the virus.

Brantly became the director of the Ebola clinic at his mission hospital in Monrovia, where he wore a full-body protective suit for hours each day in the scorching heat as he treated countless numbers of infected patients.

After realizing he had contracted the virus, Brantly immediately quarantined himself and followed strict procedures on what to do when treating patients.
Just days before he became ill and isolated himself, Amber and their two children had left for the US to attend a wedding, CBS reports.

They had shown no signs of Ebola virus and their temperatures were monitored regularly upon their arrival to ensure there were no symptoms of the disease.

But that hasn’t stopped people from being worried that the family presented an extreme risk of the viral infection to the US.

The health ministry of Liberia is currently investigating how Brantly could have contracted Ebola since he took so many precautions to prevent it from happening.

“We’re trying to figure out what went wrong because he was always very careful,” said assistant health minister Tolbert Nyenswah.

Oh, I totally agree that it is probably a "distraction". Look at the market dropping like a rock.

On the other hand... perhaps THIS is what they're trying to "distract" from?? Will we ever know when the "real deal" rolls around. Reminds me of Peter crying wolf all the time - till nobody believed him - and the wolf was there.

But, if as you say, "Here you have a supposed family, 1000 times more knowledgable about the precautions to take than somebody like me".... Then it begs the question of how Dr. Brantly came down with it, and WHY he thought it was only "malaria" for 4 days....

I guess I shouldn't be amazed that with all the threads here (and I have by no means read them all - so may have missed it!!), WHY no one knows if the family left before or AFTER he thought he had "malaria". Which was actually Ebola, and he was contagious by the time (if not before) he was showing symptoms.

When someone is dying of a fatal virus, I doubt they are thinking about protocol, fear and panic set in and they could spread it desperately seeking help.

Re: REAL timeline of Brantly's family's exposure to Ebola?
I think one of the major problems is that no one knows exactly how he contracted it. The assumption I'M seeing is that somehow the precautions failed while he was treating patients.

My thought is that he contracted it out "on the street", so to speak, while NOT treating patients....

Which opens the door for anybody ELSE to catch it while out "on the street"...[my edit]

Well, THIS article says "tested positive for the Ebola virus last Wednesday". However, the family of his next door neighbor says "He began feeling bad on Wednesday but thought it was Malaria. Later in the day on Saturday he realized that he too had become a victim of the dreaded disease. Yesterday Mel & Jake were given 5 minutes to evacuate their house." [link to phertzler.wordpress.com]

This blog from a close friend of Dr. Brantly will tell you what they did with 21 other people who were merely his neighbors at the clinic, a clinic which is now shut down. They are all in isolation at a hotel in Kenya for 21 days and all their possessions burned. It gives some idea about the volatility of this outbreak and the seriousness it poses to all of us. T

hey have also scrubbed the video which accompanied the blog of the clinic in question. As well as any updated info about those being held in quarantine who were potentially exposed.

If it's not airborne why such measures?

couple things stuck out to me. that the doc is still over there being treated but 2 people are being transported back here to be treated,

the other is that it says while the family of doc is being monitored, they are not in quaratine..that means they are free to come and go. i thought that was dangerous.
from what i understood, he began presenting symptoms a day before his family left, tho wasn't forced to seek med attn until 3 days later, he may have been contagious before his family left.

Amber Brantly says in a statement Tuesday that her husband Kent "remains very physically weak" but they "believe God will deliver" him from the deadly virus.

Brantly and the couple's 3- and 5-year-old children left Liberia for a scheduled visit to the United States on July 20. Days later, Kent Brantly quarantined himself in the isolation ward of a hospital where he had been treating Ebola patients after testing positive for the disease. Well, I think that they are deliberately giving us a lot of disinformation, ie. on Wed. he thought he had malaria, he was not actually diagnosed with ebola until SAT!!! So, if it is true that the family left days before WED, then they are probably not contagious.

Except that we REALLY don't know when someone BECOMES contagious....

The blog post is from the 27th but if you read it and then look at a calendar, he was diagnosed the afternoon of the 26th

Sunday-July 27, 2014: I don’t know if you are following the news but there is a very serious situation in Liberia with the Ebola outbreak. It is getting worse as the day progresses…. Here is the situation my brother’s (Richard) family is dealing with.

My niece, Melanie, and her husband, Jake, are serving with Samaritans Purse (SP) in Liberia. The outbreak has now hit their compound and their house. They live in a duplex and the doctor next door who shares the duplex is the one making world news today. He is the lead doctor and now he has Ebola. He is from Texas and they were due to go home for a family wedding and much needed vacation. His wife and children flew home last week and he was due to leave today. Today word has come that a nurse also has contracted Ebola.

Yesterday morning Mel talked to Dr. Brantly on their front porch. Later in the day on Saturday he realized that he too had become a victim of the dreaded disease. Yesterday Mel & Jake were given 5 minutes to evacuate their house. They are temporarily living with another family. Their home will probably be turned into a hospital unit and probably their possessions burned. It is questionable if they will be able to retrieve anything else.

Former Fort Worth doctor’s mom awaits condition report.
Just found this ^ article posted July 29th - Tuesday.

Please read this entire article carefully.
I think it has more info.
I won't say what I picked up on so I don't influence...
See if you come up with a date that he was diagnosed.
And other important details.

So one only wonders: Which is it? And are we being given DELIBERATE misinformation?

This article says: Amber Brantly and the children departed for a wedding in the U.S. just days before Brantly fell ill and quarantined himself.

So, the question is "days" before Wed? Or "days" before Sat? I certainly have to go with the "eyewitness" account....

ABILENE, Texas —
Amber Brantly says in a statement Tuesday that her husband Kent "remains very physically weak" but they "believe God will deliver" him from the deadly virus.

Brantly and the couple's 3- and 5-year-old children left Liberia for a scheduled visit to the United States on July 20. Days later, Kent Brantly quarantined himself in the isolation ward of a hospital where he had been treating Ebola patients after testing positive for the disease. His host organization Samaritan's Purse has recalled non-essential employees from Liberia.

Amber Brantly and the children are in Abilene under a 21-day fever watch but are not believed to have contracted the illness.

end.

So I conclude he was diagnosed on Wednesday July 23rd.
Family left for US on July 20th.
Went to a wedding - ?
Now in Abeline Texas.

Many are praying for this Dr. and his family.

It is questionable if they will be able to retrieve anything else.

call me a paranoid glpr at it's finest but i can see how they could set this up. knowing the docs wife was headed back to the states, infect him at the correct time and va-walla.
feel bad for the guy, he was a true humanitarian, had worked in that field before going over there.

Yep! All of it true and possible.

Hope he survives!

something else, they are mystified about how he contracted it, maybe that's because he was deliberately infected. it would be so easy to do. seems much more likely than a doc trained in the protocol. also i would think being a father to young children would give him an extra edge when it came to safety in a situation like that. and why in the world would they not isolate his family at the first clue?? they wouldn't have had to be harsh about it. if it'd been me i'd of insisted i go into quarantine.

The family may be under a "fever watch" but they certainly aren't in isolation if they went to a wedding, think of how many people that could have spread the virus to.

WE must have been posting at the same time, LOL!

Yeah, I'm just reading so much contradictory information about everything... how it it spread, time frame of contagion. Geez, even the incubation period is 2-21 days...

What if someone is actually contagious within 2 days, even if they don't get "sick" until 21 days - that's 19 days of "spreading the germs"! What a nightmare!

And what the authorities are "saying" vs. what they're "doing" are contradictory... Like, they're saying "nothing here to see", but scrambling around trying to find people who may have become infected....
