I have a few systems going but they are in my house. Plus I have many of the same tropical varieties potted that I move in and out. I desperately need to get it all into a greenhouse.
I know I could do the same thing.

I'm in Nebraska. We should connect somehow.

I have a couple of house l plants who need their own greenhouse!

He explains how HOT it gets in a winter greenhouse. This one has double wall construction with the inflation fan.

That must have been a fun tour!

I'm amazed too at what people are doing and posting threads about.

There are so many ways to grow food that are new to home gardens and commercial growing too.

This scheme of growing veggies in a vertical tower system looks pretty good to me. Also looks pretty good to John Kohler. What I like is that in a small family greenhouse, it can multiply the amount of crops you can grow. Or if you have maybe only a balcony for grow space, you can still grow a lot of fresh food, especially if you plant cut and come again plants like the various lettuces, preens like spinach or chard, broccoli and brussels sprouts which will bear little heads again after the first harvest.

John Kohler again, explaining the vertical pallet garden. I was going to build on last year but hurt my arm badly and couldn't do much. But my pallet is waiting for me in the shed and I'll be into it in just a couple of months..

OP, this is an awesome thread, if people follow your lead so much suffering and want can be stopped.

But I live in South Louisiana and we are just overcome with copper heads and moccasins (poisonous snakes). Do you have any suggestions on how to keep them out of the greenhouse?

They are always looking for water, food and a warm place.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: How I grow food year-round despite harsh winters
If I were going to do a tiny space garden, like between a driveway and a fence, or on a balcony, I would plant one of these pallet gardens and plant tomato and cucumber in containers on either side.

If you plant a variety of lettuces or greens at the top, then small carrots the next row down, then green onions or chives the next row, then bush beans at the bottom so that the plants can flop out onto the ground, you can have a nice mini garden that will provide you with veggies and salads all summer. If you can put two pallet gardens in you'll have the equivalent space of a 3'x16' raised garden.

You can buy carrot seed for short carrots, 'baby' carrots or cute round cattots like these [link to www.ufseeds.com]

You can buy seeds for salad varieties which will give you a nice selection of salad makings.

For tomatoes in a container you can get so many kinds of cherry tomatoes, or varieties that are particularly good for containers. Same for cucumbers.

During World War II and even after, people depended a lot on backyard "Victory Gardens" here in the US.

victorygarden

I had a friend who grew up in Germany who said that the towns would give out "allotments" of ground that was unused for people to grow gardens. She said that her father was the railroad station manager, and they had an allotment next to the tracks.

There is so much waste space in modern America, so little interest in growing food. :-(

I have no idea, I have never had a ferret.

But I know they kill snakes. Maybe you should just google 'pet ferret' and see what they say.

Or maybe somebody else has raised them.

Wow! A ration book!

Let's hope we never have to use one of those!

I read on a thread by Tess that they are rationing lettuce in UK because the farms in Spain had a crop failure. That thread is what prompted me to revive this one.

You are certainly right about people just taking advantage of welfare.

That is really sad.
