User ID: 58068420 United States 07/06/2014 02:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My patio table exploded! Quoting: CowgirlK BEWARE .... If you have a glass table, it could blow up all by itself. I’m not kidding, here’s my story: I have a large glass patio table and chairs that’s located under a covered patio in my back yard. Yesterday (the 4th of July) I was sitting outside at the table having a beer when the phone rang. I went inside to get the phone, chatted for a few minutes, and went back outside to finish my beer only to discover that the table had shattered into a million pieces. Tiny pellets of glass were everywhere. I was totally freaked out. How the heck does a tempered glass table just explode? It was 4th of July and lots of people were shooting off fireworks but none of my immediate neighbors were shooting them off. Then I started thinking, maybe the table was hit with a stray bullet or a kid with a sling shot, but someone would have had to be a well-trained sniper to hit the table under the patio and not break a window too. What else could be that powerful to disintegrate a glass table and not damage anything else around it? Then it came to me, (thanks to GLP threads) the table was hit with a scalar weapon and I was under attack! So, I waited for a few minutes to make sure the attack was over before I started cleaning up the glass. Anyway, regardless of how the table was broken, my 4th of July was pretty much ruined because I spent the next 3 hours, sweeping up glass, running a shop-vac and hosing everything down. Good news is, I only cut myself twice. After I got everything cleaned up, I started searching online for “exploding glass tables” and discovered that I’m not the only person this has ever happened to. Who knew?? >>Glass Patio Tables Explode Without Warning Glass-topped patio tables are shattering into thousands of pieces, and federal records show it’s been happening since at least 2004. And, yet, the government has never put out a safety warning.<< [link to dfw.cbslocal.com] And then I found this video: [link to youtu.be] So just remember, next time you are sitting at a glass table, chances are it's tempered glass that has been weaponized by Chinese manufacturing. Yikes! I got one just like that one in MY back yard patio. Corelle dinnerware while relatively new might be accidentally dropped and not damaged while older Corelle dinnerware will explode upon impact shattering across a room if accidentally dropped. Older vehicle windows made of tempered glass would suddenly shatter into a mosaic of pieces sometimes without breaking apart which means that you could park vehicle one night and awaken to find your vehicle window shattered. Glass breakages into a million pieces have also been noted in older shower and patio doors along with Pyrex products. Glass furniture can explode suddenly A procedure to make broken glass safer sometimes causes glass products, including glass-topped furniture, to break without warning. All glass furniture will likely soon be required to be made of tempered glass. However, the procedure that makes tempered glass safer can also make it suddenly shatter. [link to ths.gardenweb.com] Hey SilverPatroit...thanks for all the links. Good job! The wral link says.."The thicker the glass, the less likely it is to shatter. It's also important not to overload glass furniture." Interestingly, my patio table was very thick glass. The table was only 4 years old, no scratches or nicks, kept under the covered patio and out of the killer Texas sun. For that matter, I treated it regularly with RainX to keep the glass shinny and dust free. The only thing on the table when it exploded was a beer in a kuzzie and an empty ashtray. This is the company that made my patio furniture. We are not talking k-mart stuff. [link to www.woodard-furniture.com] Anyway, people need to be aware that regardless of the price or quality, glass tables can and do explode. There is something to be said for those old wooden picnic tables. My table was beautiful...but beauty comes at a price which in my case was a holiday ruined because I spent it cleaning up broken glass. |

If so, is there a special frequency or decibel level needed? Answer Of course! Yes! Sound can indeed break glass. This is a wonderful question. What make this a good question is that it indicates that, like many people, you do not realize how powerful unseen forces can be. It is good that you have understood enough to articulate this kind of question. [link to www.physlink.com] So the sound waves from the fireworks must have busted my table. I guess that's as good an explanation as any. Thank God my window didn't break too! LOL |

Did we shrink wrap it correctly? Did we get the cooling jets to cool it fast enough to get it shrink wrap?” The consumer complaints span many manufacturers, so the manufacturing flaw is apparently occurring inside many table-making companies. “From a consumer standpoint, if I were to buy a new one, I would go look up which tables had the most incidents of failure.” The Boslows took a different approach and decided to buy a different type table this time. User ID: 56584438 United States 07/06/2014 08:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have seen many of these same tables explode without warning while unattended. I deduced it as bad design as the rubber bumpers are spaced too far to fully support it and are likely to fall off when the table is adjusted or moved, leading to the fore mentioned stress points. The frame is too weak to make up for ground or surface irregularities, so temperature cycling leads to metal on glass. IMHO the hole in the middle doesn't help either. Go with teak if you are looking for a nice table, and keep it oiled every year, it will last forever. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 767758 Metal frame hard point stress safety glass to the point that the safety glass shatters. Expansion and contraction with the heat will cause that , specifically if e glass is fixed into place and has no room to expand or contract the stress on the safety glass causes it to shatter into millions of pieces . |

User ID: 43543937 United States 07/06/2014 10:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | HOLY CRAP! Yesterday I just finished trimming my yard and I was laying on the couch. My wife had just set up our patio furniture. We have a large yard and my neighbors are fairly far away. There were no neighbors out and it was very quiet. My wife and I heard a strange noise. My wife went out to look around. Our patio table was shattered. I was shocked because it was a thick glass and in good shape, also there was no evidence that anything had hit it to make it break. I thought about how it could have broke for quite a while. When I saw your post it sent chills down my spine. I believe you believe this is important |
