If a rubber-like washer was between theglass and metal frame this wouldn't happen Yep. one scratch from glass on metal and POOF, its gone soon enough (depending on scratch size/depth and temperature ) There was rubber between the glass and the table. It was well made furniture...or so I thought. It was solid cast aluminum patio furniture. All shipped in the same box? China and well made DO NOT go together. Been there. Done that. Paid the price. Now ill pay a lot more if I want something that will last a hundred years or more. Heirloom plus quality |

At least I would have had some people around to help me clean up the mess. The chairs are still fine now that I got all the glass out of the cushions. Ya got any tips on how to make a wood table top? No more glass tables for this girl! If you wanna go for the rustic look... or as i call it... 'cheap as hell' rofl :) Tobacco sticks cut, sanded level, stained and laid together tight make a nice look you have to secure them to the table on the underside and brace em on the bottom etc... but i've seen tables that have this pattern with them before... :tsticktable: if done right... they can be cheap and look good Last Edited by Dr. Acula on 07/05/2014 11:55 PM _______________________ |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 37299122 United States 07/05/2014 11:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My patio table exploded! Quoting: CowgirlK BEWARE .... If you have a glass table, it could blow up all by itself. I’m not kidding, here’s my story: I have a large glass patio table and chairs that’s located under a covered patio in my back yard. Yesterday (the 4th of July) I was sitting outside at the table having a beer when the phone rang. I went inside to get the phone, chatted for a few minutes, and went back outside to finish my beer only to discover that the table had shattered into a million pieces. Tiny pellets of glass were everywhere. I was totally freaked out. How the heck does a tempered glass table just explode? It was 4th of July and lots of people were shooting off fireworks but none of my immediate neighbors were shooting them off. Then I started thinking, maybe the table was hit with a stray bullet or a kid with a sling shot, but someone would have had to be a well-trained sniper to hit the table under the patio and not break a window too. What else could be that powerful to disintegrate a glass table and not damage anything else around it? Then it came to me, (thanks to GLP threads) the table was hit with a scalar weapon and I was under attack! So, I waited for a few minutes to make sure the attack was over before I started cleaning up the glass. Anyway, regardless of how the table was broken, my 4th of July was pretty much ruined because I spent the next 3 hours, sweeping up glass, running a shop-vac and hosing everything down. Good news is, I only cut myself twice. After I got everything cleaned up, I started searching online for “exploding glass tables” and discovered that I’m not the only person this has ever happened to. Who knew?? >>Glass Patio Tables Explode Without Warning Glass-topped patio tables are shattering into thousands of pieces, and federal records show it’s been happening since at least 2004. And, yet, the government has never put out a safety warning.<< [link to dfw.cbslocal.com] And then I found this video: [link to youtu.be] So just remember, next time you are sitting at a glass table, chances are it's tempered glass that has been weaponized by Chinese manufacturing. They were just sending you a message. They waited till your table was out of view to fire their weapon. They don't want to hurt you just yet. Take this as a warning. |

The video report also says this is happening with shower doors, oven doors and sinks! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42079795 What about replacement windshields/ glass on cars? Are some of them manufactured in China? :¬, LAMINATED windshields are different than tempered glass. the plastic holds the glass together. If you are worried, put solar guard (clear) or window ring film on all other windows |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42079795 Car windshields are laminated. It prevents this The WTC glass was made in the US.. Shipped to China to be tooled. Shipped BACK and now they are having issues with the glass as the tooling ruined millions of dollars of work and shipping costs. But what if the glass explodes inside the laminate and the windshield blows into the car in a big swatch of laminated exploding glass? |

I like the metal mesh type. Concrete tables are also a nice option. They aren't hard to make if a person knows how to make forms and finish concrete. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 37299122 United States 07/06/2014 12:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Seriously, OPTARD, you can't figure out why that glass might have busted and you have to tell about it on GPL? Maybe it was already stressed and the sound waves from the fireworks finished it. Or maybe it was just the fireworks. Or maybe you drag the table around. That might stress glass. |
