You don't really say what the steel is. Is it mild steel? if so how do you get a temper? Is it a piece of spring steel from a leaf spring of a car? One would think that would take a temper better but you might want to anneal before working.

1095 steel , but if your on a budget you can even use a lawnmower blade


1095 series has 0.95% carbon, which is very close to the carbon content of tamahagane (steel used in Japan for making nihonto)
