how much more than the actual cost of the house did you end up paying?

I've been mortgage a debt free for over 10 years. All it took was a couple of good investments in property flips and the ability to build my current home all by myself.

I payed off my home and land earlier this month.....What am I to spend all that money on ?

It feels great to feel free....I can things I never could before....I payed it off many years early by paying extra on the principle....now I reap the rewards...

Yea, you took vacations but now, I'm keeping all of the money I make!

Went over the value of the property about 20 grand in interest payments. Now own the house, acreage, all mine with proceeds from tiny sale (The piece by the golf course)

The rest of the prop is worth a great deal, still have my horses too. The land alone is up 10X. Not 10% - 1000%

My mortgage is gone, too.

only way I could afford to retire. Which I will well before age 60.

Now, people used to throw mortgage-burning parties where they watched their paid-up mortgage turn into smoke . .

nowadays, you are a financial outlier if you pick this route.

Several people told us that paying the mortgage off was a terrible move. A financial planner, and a well-meaning relative with many great investments.

But having your money in your house - and the freedom it gives you to live life - is what some choose.

4.5 years left for me. I agree with you. I will be debt free before 50. Oh the golden years are gonna be so awesome.

My first question!

I bought a fuckton of land, waited a few years, and then sold a part of it for 10 times what I paid for it.

I would like to claim white privilege, but I'm a wetback...

Still have property taxes.....

Technically you're just renting

Now that truth hurts, a person whom just paid their 'debt' on a property. They feel good.

Be nice, apologize for making a homeowner feel like shit!

Then,

Homeowner,

Apologize for making the truthful one have you realize, that you will be paying $$$ on that property for - ever.

Taxes are your rent, fees, permits, etc,.

I have always been a fan of Heinlein, then I re-read it all and while I enjoy the science fiction aspect of his writing, I find he is a pervert.

Property taxes are not rent. I am happy to pay them. I use the roads. I use the police all the time, to remove neighborhood kids from the pastures, and to set up speed traps on our road for retarded hot-rodders. I have kids in different schools, and those schools need financial support. Shit, I still get to keep my AG exemption. 17 bucks in taxes for 1/2 million square feet last year, in the middle of Houston haha. As to the 300 or so bucks I need to put away each month to cover my yearly insurance and other taxes. I DONT GIVE A FUCK. I take home more than that in a post breakfast stretch of work from my couch.

Ill tell you what I don't have though...

Debt.

Bitch.

And to all those people that sent me good wishes, I pray God grants you all good fortune, long life, and a lack of loneliness. Hell, even the ill-wishers - Good luck, peeps. Remember the longer you have a bad attitude, the longer it takes to get rid of...

As soon as my 10 year old graduates and goes to college, ill be getting the fuck out of here.

The City is no place to live, too many riff raff.

Nothing good can come from what is going on in the country, especially in terms of quality of life in dense population areas.

I may, however, build some multi-level climate controlled storage (and a bunker underneath haha) when we leave.

There are 100,000 people within a 5 mile radius of my house.

Good for you. I'd keep it repaired though and might want to think about moving ASAP if the neighborhood is going down. Get out while getin"s good. You could alway buy now and if it takes a while to sell you won't have double notes to pay. Also, when you do sell, put it all on the new place. Believe me once things start going down hill in an area it's not going to get better. Anyways 10 years old isn't that old to relocate and better now than when he or she is a teenager.
