scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
So after seeing a post here earlier about playing the early part of rolls of tickets to get a better chance of winning on any given scratch ticket, and also the trick of buying them in bulk......I decided to try my luck at some tickets here.

Normally if buy, which isn't a lot.....very rare actually, both cause don't have a ton to spend and don't wanna get into a habit of overdoing it like my mom has over the years....I buy a ticket or two....sometimes a few different types and usually don't have much success.

This time though.....after looking at the prize odds on the Michigan lottery website....and seeing a $1 game that had a bunch of prizes still available (aka it looked like a fairly new set of tickets relative to other games), I did something different and bought a pack of 10. On those, I ended up with 2 winners totaling $7, $5 on one, and $2 on another. So for spending $10 I gained 2/3 of that back, not bad.

When I got back home I got to thinking....could it be the best chances to win are when you play according to the odds? Like for these $1 tickets...the odds were about 1 in 5....and sure enough it had worked out for me where each batch of 5 had 1 winner in the bunch. I didn't entirely break even course, but I came fairly close and I'd like to think over time if I played according to this strategy and according to the games that had the most prizes available at a given time...I'd be liable to not only do that but maybe even get ahead by quite a bit after a while.

I am not intending to play a ton per se over time now.....just what I could afford to do, maybe capping at $50 over a certain period of time depending on what my budget is....but I am gonna start keeping track of this, as to the number of tickets I buy, the amount spent on them and the net gain/loss from that. I honestly do think there is a way here to take what for most is really a losers game, and turn the odds in your favor.

Anyone else ever try something like this with any type of success?

Good luck, let me know how you end up doing. I will be updating this thread as I go along with my own results too. I am curious to see how well this works.

This has been known for at least 20 years...

Play the newest games in bulk. More prizes in early rolls to get people back to play that game again -- fewer winners but larger prizes in later rolls.

I'd settle for the smaller prizes built up over time myself....I know finding anything bigger would be like a needle in a haystack and I'd spend more than I could likely afford trying to find it.

But yeah....it makes more sense to play this way vs. 1 ticket at a time.....course most probably aren't thinking about that, hence how the games make as much money as they do.

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
I prefer horses. Betting on horses is 100% succesful if you play it right.

The trick is to bet on the 1 to 3 or 1 to 4 horse to help keep your odds up without having to delve into the minutia of horse racing. Each time you bet you double your bet. Just make sure that you don't run out of money. When you do win you will turn a handy profit.

The money gets big quick though. $2 to $4 to $8 to $16 to $32 to $64. If you win on your $64 bet you'll win $190 while having only spent $124.

Not sure how much of a sure thing that'd be.....seems like there'd be a lot of variables.....but I never did do horse racing bets so...

I know, and I don't mean like $50 at a time generally, but like over a month or something like that. I understand where you're coming from though. I'll see how this goes though......cause if my instincts are right for what I spend I would be getting back plus some but gonna see what happens here.

Yeah therein lies the game within the game.....get people thinking mainly about the big prizes vs. overall odds and playing to those. You're not thinking straight then as to how to play to actually win more often.

I think betting on greyhound and horse racing is much easier to win money on, as far as gambling goes. I've won $100+ on a $2 bet.

As far as scratch off lottery ticket goes, I've fiiguredout the statistics and buying the $5 scratch offs have the best probability of winning compared to cost. (I.e. if you spend $20 by buying four $5 scratch offs, you're more likely to win more than $20)

I do notice the odds on the higher cost tickets go up compared to others, plus the base prize is higher as well. When you combine those I could see the odds a bit better as opposed to smaller ones. I'll likely be testing some of those too over time to see how they compare.

Not bad btw on the horse racing bet....that could maybe be something to win big quick I suppose, probably more likely to there than on scratches.

Yeah, your odds are a lot lower there obviously. So I would say the best strategy is to buy in bulk numbers the ones with the most left. Seems like it'd make the most sense to get the most out of the odds.

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
just an update.....I went to look at my two winning tickets.....looking at the ticket numbers....and I noticed I misread one of em before. I thought I had only won $2 on it, but I actually won $10! So already having only done this once, I'm $5 ahead, having $15 and only having spent $10. Good start for sure.

As an aside, speaking about ticket numbers, I think there is an extra strategy one can deploy, where you can ensure you are keeping your odds solid by looking at the ticket numbers from the roll you get and trying to make sure you make the most of your purchase. That is to say...if the odds are 1 in 5, check the first ticket to see if it's starting on a number ending in 1 (or check the last one to see if it ends in 0), and if it's not....buy a couple tickets extra until you'd get the same 1 in 5 odds for your roll you'd get with a normal 10 let's say. This way if the previous 5 you were in the midst of had a winner already, you won't have wasted any money on those first few, might even get a extra winner in the deal too. So that'd be another way to maximize your chances I think.

But yeah....already ahead, let's see what happens from here.

Odds are a funny thing.... lets say you flip a coin well odds say you have a 50/50 chance rite....sorta. when you flip 1 coin the odds are 50/50. Now do best out of ten....lets say you flip 5 tails well odds are you should flip 5 heads.....yet flip 6 is tails also....odds for heads just went up....to 60% ..flip 7 is tails again. ..you can never get to 100% odds but at the same time you cant keep flipping tails.

The only way to win at odds is a combination like the lottery. If there are a million combinations then buying every combination guarantees you a win. The math for the mega millions is like 17 million combinations. Spend 17 million dollars....win the mega jackpot.

The odds on the back of the card....lets say 1 in 1000 for example. I you THInK your odds are 1 in 1000. But now you also have to factor in location...lets say your store has 2000 tickets to sell and neither roll has a winning ticket....there is no way to win even if you spend $2000 yet the store down the street has 3 winning tickets in 2000.

I hope that makes sense.

Hmm that does.....hadn't thought of it like that.....does make sense though.....winners in rolls is almost a crapshoot in this then I guess isn't it? I would tend to think with a winner each 5 tickets sold though in my case.....it's not as much as it might be in the example you give. Interesting though just the sane.

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
Here's my story:

Worked a retail job and we sold lotto. It was a mom n pop style shop and it was slow. I had walked to work with $10 dollars in my pocket and it was very hot outside.

I decided I'd scratch me some lotto. I played of the same roll but stopped after spending nine dollars. I had some $1.00 wins and some free tickets which I used to continue off of the roll. I don't remember, it was probably 12 tickets or so.

I thought I had a fairly good run, but it was hot outside and I held onto that $1 so I could by a cold coke for the walk home after work.

This guy comes in and purchases the next ticket off of the roll I had been playing and immediately hits $1500.

More power to him, but that was the worst coke I ever drank in my life.

A very true cool story bro.
