Wrong. Marriage is a sacrament from God. It existed as a sacrament, like baptism and Communion, for THOUSANDS of years before governments existed.



They can get a civil union. Or find a church that will marry them.

Please don't tell churches whom they must baptize, give Communion to, perform last rites for, or marry.

Separation of Church and State means the State should leave the sacraments ALONE.

Does the marriage oath not have something in it that references God? What do they do in court with oaths for people that do not believe in God? Do they just promise to tell the truth? How solid is their oath if they do not believe they have to answer to any authority higher than themselves?

They went to the courthouse, the court appointed clerk told them he'd only marry them in his church. They went to his church, and THEN he refused to marry them because their beliefs didn't match his.

The couple went to the judge overseeing these clerks. Instead of telling the 1st clerk he was violating a law, he advised the couple to go to a 2nd clerk.

Both the 1st clerk & the judge were violating the couple's rights.

Which I found very interesting because people who stand up and say its only Church's that perform marriages sound like they're Muslim.

Legally, quite contraire to the one who thinks only Church's marry you, the only legal marriage is the civil, government stamped one.

The Church ceremony is an extra flourish some people add.

when asked on forms i usually lie and say i am christian like most people do, its easier that way. i bet 70% of those who if asked respond they are christian will tell you in private they dont believe it.

A preacher or JP should have the right to refuse marriage to anyone they want.

People seem to forget that the idea of marrying or handfasting has been around longer than their silly religions.

It has ALWAYS been a social trapping, the religions have come and gone but the idea of people binding themselves together as a couple socially spreads across cultures and religions.

Yet one more tradition the bible thumpers have claimed as their own that was created by bigger and brighter minds.

How is this not a civil rights violation? The only reason this clerk has the power to marry is because of the laws that give him that power. And those laws do not require a stated belief in God.

If the clerk wants to be a minister in a church, he should go be one. But if he wants to be a court clerk, he has to follow the law. And what the heck was the judge doing? Granted, he told them to talk to another clerk, but how could he at least not conference with the first clerk ans set him straight?

Maybe he did, and they just kept it quiet, so as to not help any lawsuit against them.

This has been going on for years, that is why people go get married in front of the justice of the peace... religion is not involved.

But a JP is not required to perform a ceremony, douchebag. They have the power to. They are not paid to do so except by the persons being married, and then only at their own will.

Actually this varies tremendously from State to State as the duties and powers of a JP vary greatly.
