What are your thoughts in terms of gold's price by the end of 2014? why it declined significantly in the past two years?

What is the true value of gold? I've learned much about our fiat system & know that paper currency is worthless because it holds no true value. Ok. Got it. Why is a gold backed system better? What is the worth of gold? What is it about gold other than it's beauty? Or is that it? It' seems the only things with true worth are shelter and sustenance.

That's right. The USA corn and wheat field produce enough

Re: Why gold? What is it's value?
Gold has value because of its rarity & properties.

Especially it's combination of properties.

Gold will not rust, tarnish, or decay. It is inert, acid wont disolve it. Its very malleable, reflective, and a good conductor of electricity.

So the fact that its malleable & wont rust/tarnish makes it great for dental work.

Its malleable and conducts electricity makes it great for connecting electrical leads.

Its reflective and wont rust makes it great as a sun shield for astronoughts & the ISS.

There are many other things gold does well, but you get the point.

Silver conducts electricity better than gold, but silver is not as malleable and it tarnishes...so silver isn't the best metal to use for these applications.

Interesting points.

I think maybe because in the same way that the dollar has been linked to oil; gold is linked to the value of human beings as a commodity and so it is representative of that on the world stage - so at one time it could mean value related to humans trafficked - and at others to moral values - I think it is secretly to do with this. It has metaphoric value - which is a depiction of reality in some way.

Maybe.

Re: Why gold? What is it's value?
Why is the golden ratio, when found in a woman's facial dimensions, considered universally beautiful? Explain this, and you might be able to explain why real gold is treasured universally.

It is rare and beautiful, what more can you ask for as a bartering item? it is the best store of value known to man.

It doesn't rust and is easily divisible. It is dense, so you can easily transport it.

It has a spotless history as a very valuable commodity going back 6000-8000 years or more.

Gold never lets you down. Never.

Fiat currencies...well they are like a two-bit whore with a fat ass, compared to gold.

I don't know if moral values was the correct term to use there - as I have heard that interpreted in more than one way - which can be confusing - as can be people's interpretation of what is constituted by or with the word "God" - so while the expression you use: "God money" - might be fair - it is also open to interpretation.

A good ethical sense? Encompassing empathy, logic, emotional strength - decision making based on the greater good while accommodating the not so great... etc. Its a whole another debate I guess.

xx

Sometimes, I really don't think people realise how important this stuff is to the well-being of our planet and therefore why gold carries this intrinsic value: it is because we need to see how important human beings can be - in the best possible way - we have to find the best value in them - and not to exploit them - then the world will change.

I have said that like I am not a human being - I have a bad habit of speaking in the third person.

I should have said how important we are as human being and how valuable we are to each other - not as commodities.

*sigh*

I don't know the properties of Platinum and Rhodium.

But as far as a metal having properties...SILVER should be king!

Silver is:
Most light reflective. (photography & solar panels)
Antibacterial (water filters)
The best conductor of electricity that we know of (it's in every TV, cell phone, light switch, etc.)
It conducts heat & cold as well as it conducts electricity.

Re: Why gold? What is it's value?
It has always had value even in your ancient times when it was normal to see people starving to death it still kept value and saved the lives of those who owned it.

This may very well happen again.

Further it has a mystical effect on humans when it is touched and they then feel the need to possess it I believe this acute condition is called goldenitis musthaveitis...

Historically/ biblically etc silver was of immense value and I would be surprised if there is nowhere in the ancient writings which says something like: silver being as gold - and even at some points of greater value.

Silver, in ancient times referred to the defence or the defenders of the gold - so you can see how they are intertwined - they protected the highest and the lowest of the land - and were later incorporated into the golden circle.

I have read a lot of amazing things also about platinum and rhodium too.

You can say the same thing about agricultural land...except land produces food and is thus infinitely more valuable when economies crash.

Those living through the depression know this.

My own grandparents, who lived in NYC at that time, talked about all the mothers taking over abandoned lots and the parks to grow food.

Imagine Central Park turned into a general population-commandeered farm...
