Who was even asking to begin with? It's like a criminal calling the police to tell them he/she didn't do it before the crime has even been reported. So glad you asked! Who is asking? The VA for one, who has also been the center of controversy as of late, though not for the DNA requests/collection. Add to that the targeting of veterans as terrorist threats by the DHS and local LEOs and well, who knows. Million Veteran Program [link to www.research.va.gov] What is the purpose of the Million Veteran Program? The Veterans Affairs (VA) Research and Development program is launching the Million Veteran Program (MVP), an important partnership between VA and Veterans to learn more about how genes affect health, to improve health care for Veterans. In order to do this, MVP will establish one of the largest databases of genetic, military exposure, lifestyle, and health information. ... What does participation involve? The goal of MVP is to partner with Veterans receiving services in the VA health care system who volunteer to share their health information, as well as genetic material. Active involvement in this program includes: - Filling out surveys about health and health-related behaviors; - Providing a blood sample (containing DNA and other substances) that will be stored for future genomic analyses; - Allowing secure access to VA and VA-linked medical and health information, including past and future health records; and - Agreeing to future contact ... Why is it important that so many Veterans participate in the study? In order to learn about the role of genes, health researchers compare genetic and health information from many thousands of people. With such large amounts of information, researchers are better able to gain valuable knowledge to improve health care. Last Edited by Ag47 on 05/20/2014 12:05 AM |

Just like the 'Patriot Act.' I want to say picking on veterans is the stupidest thing they've ever done, but it seems like they want DHS/LEO to duke it out with the military in the streets. [link to www.inquisitr.com] [youtube] This is a little off topic to the original thread, but is relevant to the MVP and DNA collection sub-theme: Federal ‘Biosurveillance’ Plan Seeking Direct Access to Americans’ Private Medical Records [link to cnsnews.com] The federal government is piecing together a sweeping national “biosurveillance” system that will give bureaucrats near real-time access to Americans’ private medical information in the name of national security, according to Twila Brase, a public health nurse and co-founder of the Citizens Council for Health Freedom. The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response is currently seeking public comment on a 52-page draft of the proposed “National Health Security Strategy 2015-2018” (NHSS). ... “It’s very broad. It doesn’t seem to have any limits, except they say something about, you know, properly protecting the data. But from our perspective, if the government gets access to this kind of data, [and] is allowed to do research with the data…then our privacy has already been compromised. The government has already said that our data is their data for their purposes of national health security,” Brase told CNSNews.com. ... But Brase warns that the government’s biosurveillance plan is much more intrusive than the data collection currently being done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “We’re of the mind that the Fourth Amendment actually means something, so you can’t access everybody’s patient’s medical record just because you say there is a security threat or just because you say it’s good for the American public,” she told CNSNews.com. ... |
