Literature/Science Buffs, I need some help.
In the movie "Green Lantern", the name of the arch enemy was named Parallax. He possessed the power to make others afraid.

I don't understand the concept of parallax well enough to see how it relates to fear. I know parallax has to do with the bending of light, but beyond that I am absolutely clueless. Can anyone help me understand this as a literary reference?

It's kind of important for me to grasp this as best as possible, because my biggest problem in life is...well, fear. I just can't wrap my head around what parallax would have to do with fear. They didn't call him Parallax without a good reason.

Have at it. I await some interesting discussion about this.

Hrm hmm

So would parallax be an irrational mind in this case?

Parallax has nothing to do with bending light. It has to do with how objects at different distances change appearance (relative to each other) when the viewpoint is changed.

I have no idea how this relates to the movie or the character.

Well that does help a bit.

I wish I could find something that explains parallax in layman's terms.

Parallax: "The effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions, e.g., through the viewfinder and the lens of a camera."

So the path to end goal - in this case proper choices - is distorted by the subject's skewed point of view.

I haven't gotten there yet.

NO spoilers :) LOL

I had to rewatch the first movie using my new found understanding of parallax :) It really made a difference in the message being conveyed. Made it a little deeper and more connected to the human condition we all share instead of viewing from the perspective of my own personal fear. Amazing how much strength we can give each other even when we are feeling absolutely helpless.

It's not exactly following the comic books, but it still packs a punch in the literary arena :) Maybe Emerald Knights will be a deeper experience than the first one. They had to spend a lot of time introducing the hero and antihero which made it a bit uneventful in the "unexpected" category.

Re: Literature/Science Buffs, I need some help.
Through the laws of geometry, particularly trigonometry, unknown angles and lengths of a triangle can be deduced by using known angles and lengths. The angles of a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. Sine, cosine, and tangent functions can be used to figure unknown lengths from known lengths and angles. Parallax is used in astronomy to measure distances of stars. You look at a star from one position and then look at the same star from another position. Essentially a huge triangle is created between the two points and the star. By carefully noting the distance between the two observation points and the angles created in those two corners of the triangle, you can work out the distance to the star.

Easy imho. The viewpoint decides whether you fear something or not. You can decide not to worry about things you can't change, by changing the way you think about it, see it in other words. Takes some practice tho.
