Moscow banning the use of Russian made rocket engines for US military and will shut down GPS sites
Moscow delivered a double whammy of bad news to US space programs today by banning the use of Russian made rocket engines for US military national security launches and by declining to prolong cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS) – says Russia’s deputy prime minister, Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and defense industries.

Virtually every aspect of the manned and unmanned US space program – including NASA, other government agencies, private aerospace company’s and crucial US national security payloads – are highly dependent on Russian & Ukrainian rocketry and are clearly at risk amidst the current Ukrainian crisis as tensions continue to escalate with deadly new clashes reported today in Ukraine with global repercussions.

The engines at issue are the Russian made RD-180 engines – which power the first stage of the venerable Atlas V rocket built by United Launch Alliance (ULA) and are used to launch a wide array of US government satellites including top secret US military spy satellites for the US National Reconnaissance Office, like NROL-67, as well as science satellites for NASA like the Curiosity Mars rover and MAVEN Mars orbiter.

Ukrainian rocketry? There, there.

So, if they banned the use, does that mean every thing in US using a RD-180 engine should be taken out of service??

Things like

US government satellites
top secret US military spy satellites for the US National Reconnaissance Office, like NROL-67,
science satellites for NASA like the Curiosity Mars rover and MAVEN Mars orbiter

I dont think so. Unless there are contracts that would deny the americans the use of the rockets already delivered/in use. Then again, contracts in this world for politicans only exist for them to be broken.
Anyway, I think existing rockets and satellites already flying should not be affected.

here are some more articles

[link to www.bloomberg.com]

Russia is halting exports of its rocket engines to the U.S. for use in launching military satellites, the country’s first major retaliation to sanctions over Ukraine.

Russia will also close Global Positioning System stations on its territory by Sept. 1 unless the U.S. allows installations for Russia’s competing Glonass system, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told reporters in Moscow today. The country also won’t comply with a U.S. request to extend work on the International Space Station beyond 2020, he said.

The Russian ban may be softened eventually, according to Konstantin Makiyenko, the deputy head of the Moscow-based Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

‘We’ll Sell’

“It’s a response to the sanctions, but I don’t think that such a decision will be implemented in reality,” he said by phone from Moscow. “If the Americans want to continue buying these rocket engines, we’ll sell them. This is cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

Moscow to suspend American GPS sites on Russian territory from June
[link to rt.com]

Russia is going to suspend the operation of all American GPS sites on its territory, starting from June 1, said Russia’s deputy PM, Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and defense industries.

"Starting June 1, we will halt the work of those stations on Russian territory,” Rogozin said.

Rogozin pointed out that American GPS ground stations are located in Russia under an agreement that dates back to 1993 and 2001.

“Under this agreement there are 11 GPS stations on the territories of 10 [Russian federal] subjects,” he said.

So, will there be a new crew on ISS?

However, NASA said that it is not aware of any such changes.

A NASA spokesperson said that ongoing operations on the ISS continue on a normal basis with a planned return of crew tonight and expected launch of a new crew in the next few weeks.

This is just going to hurt both nations with this ban. Moscow depended heavily on US support for their space program due to the huge amount of business the US government was bringing to them to build these engines. Essentially, this ban pretty much has killed Russia's space program, which in my opinion is a stupid move by Russia. They just cut off the hand that feeds them as China has no interest in using their launch vehicles.

The rocket launches will continue for NASA as they have plenty of alternatives still, considering the private launches are now cheaper than what Russia was offering, so no biggie. This instead is going to spur a lot of business to SpaceX now. The RD-180 was still superior to anything SpaceX could provide right now, but next year they'll have an engine that's more efficient and better.

The only down side is Russia is pretty much the only provider for manned space flight to the International Space Station. Russia was already complaining about the tremendous costs to supply the space station and without the US support (Which SpaceX was supposed to take over), the International Space Station is now going to go down in flames as no way Russia is going to support it by itself.

Hmmm, GPS could get even more glitchier after the shut down

Was wondering about the effect

[link to voiceofrussia.com]
If the GPS ground stations are closed, this will by no means affect the flights. If the GPS is shut down totally, then airplanes will not be able to fly," the source said. If things get as far as the total shutdown, Airbus and Boeing will refuse to install the GLONASS system and simply ban the operators from using their planes, he said.

[link to technology.iafrica.com]

If negotiations on GLONASS prove fruitless, Russia will permanently disable GPS sites on its soil, it confirmed.

Rogozin also said that Russia isn't planning to use the International Space Station past 2020.

This is despite US President Barack Obama previously announcing that the ISS would be in use until 2024.

wtf There are no GPS sites in Russia??

I don't know.... so what are they planning to shut down? scratching

Ahh, ok, found it. No GPS stations as such, but "differential correction" stations.

The "differential correction" stations provide a ground-based reference that makes GPS signals more accurate, so shutting them down would presumably affect GPS accuracy in some parts of the globe.

Interesting:

[link to geospatialworld.net]

One of the lesser known facts about the American GPS is that the seeds of the idea were sown as a result of tracking Sputnik 1

Today, the iPhone / iPad, an American icon is marketed with a GLONASS receiver chip. A large number of mobile smartphones are capable of receiving the Russian GLONASS as well as the American GPS signals, and use both for better location accuracy and are operational in the USA. Almost all leading GPS receiver manufacturers, keeping the market requirements in mind, offer GLONASS capabilities too (and most are from the USA).

Decline... I am not sure if it amazes me, or just pisses me off, that we would let ourselves (USA) get into this situation.

This is dependency and weakness could be easily understood -- and leaves no other conclusion than it was part of the plan -- whatever that plan ultimately is.

Let's just keep pumping 10's of billions into the pockets of illegals through food stamps, cash assistance, housing -- let them tell their friends and families to come across the border and join the party.... and let's ignore the basics, like developing our own rockets to get our own satellites into space.

What a fucking joke America must look like to the rest of the world... and most Americans are so busy taking 'selfies' that they have no clue.

didnt see yesterday thread. I think what they mean are the "differential correction" stations. [link to www.trimble.com]

There are a few GPS "ground stations" to control GPS

The GPS control segment consists of a global network of ground facilities that track the GPS satellites, monitor their transmissions, perform analyses, and send commands and data to the constellation.

The current operational control segment includes a master control station, an alternate master control station, 12 command and control antennas, and 16 monitoring sites.
