The Park averages about 1,600 earthquakes a year, and 1,652 quakes were recorded in 2009. Yellowstone has experienced 80 earthquake swarms in the last 15 years. Yellowstone National Park is contained within the Intermountain Seismic Belt. The Intermountain Seismic Belt is a zone of earthquake activity that runs north-south from northwestern Montana, through Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah, and southern Nevada/northern Arizona. Yellowstone National Park also is an active volcano, and surface features such as its famous geysers and hot springs are direct results of the region’s underlying volcanism. “The combination of the Intermountain Seismic Belt and Yellowstone’s active volcano creates forces that sometimes fracture the ground,” explained Dr. Hank Heasler, Yellowstone National Park Geologist. “Tectonic quakes, which are usually caused by the movement of rocks along a fault, are common in Yellowstone,” added Heasler. In other words...This is normal...Frank says relax |

[link to www.isthisthingon.org] Notice the sharp peaks followed by quick attenuation, those are the hallmarks of a techtonic quake. There are actually 2 sharp peaks in this, one is a pre-shock of around 1.5-1.8 followed by the main shock 3.9-4.0 often times they will combine them as a single event when the preshock is so small compared to the main. |

If you look at the timing between the stations for onset of the shock you'll be able to back track the direction the wave came from. It came from the WSW ~ 250 deg. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9951680 United States 04/10/2014 05:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The odd thing, is that the webcam is offline for maintenance and suposed to be up for a while, but now they are having problems with it... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55844448 The problem with the webcam is probably that when they turn it on, it's showing stuff that they don't want people to see. Maybe a fissure opened up and is venting toxic gas and/or magma right now. Put that on a webcam and the whole world will go, 'Holy shit, Yellowstone's gonna erupt! That must be why the US government wants a shitload of buses on standby for a mass evacuation of the general population in the United States! Ahhhh!' |
