Bananageddon: Millions face hunger as deadly fungus decimates global banana crop
Scientists have warned that the world’s banana crop, worth £26 billion and a crucial part of the diet of more than 400 million people, is facing “disaster” from virulent diseases immune to pesticides or other forms of control.

Alarm at the most potent threat – a fungus known as Panama disease tropical race 4 (TR4) – has risen dramatically after it was announced in recent weeks that it has jumped from South-east Asia, where it has already devastated export crops, to Mozambique and Jordan.

Really cheap solution to fungal blights.Set up colloidal silver generators and get a solution to 10 PPM,then spray(*99.9% silver +DC current through the silver in distilled water.Make a higher concentrate that you could add to regular water to spray).

It Would cost a few cents per acre, could be done on site, and requires little energy and very little silver.

Silver will kill any known fungus rapidly,it even kills the spores.

Easy : there will be half as much bananas as before.

Men will eat all the bananas, and so will not be hungry anymore. But women will be hungry and they will have nothing left to eat. Therefore they can get all of their food directly from the man's body.

Everyone will be happy.

seeings that bananas love to take up irradiated particulate from the soil, given the time frame, i'd be looking at fuku, it's the obvious suspect... not a fungus....

Monoculture of a single strain (cavendish) banana. The same thing caused the Irish potato famine.

Bingo! ThT was my first thought as well. Monsanto has created a nasty variety and trying to get them to market by wiping the real bananas out with the disease their are immune to.
Bananas did go up 2 cents per pound here last week from .47 to .49 so they still have a ways to go.

Your reply made me worry that this disease could affect other crops beside bananas, so I googled it and the pathogen itself:

"The fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum affects a wide variety of hosts of any age. Tomato, tobacco, legumes, cucurbits, sweet potatoes and banana are a few of the most susceptible plants, but it will also infect other herbaceous plants.."

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Not good. Definitely bringing the tomato plants in now!
