Rise in new cases shows Ebola has not released its deadly grip

Liberia has long since celebrated a momentous milestone, being declared Ebola-free, with no new cases in months. But for the second week in a row, the number of new cases is up in both Sierra Leone and Guinea.

At least 10 people have died after an outbreak of monkeypox disease in the east of the Central African Republic.

The country’s Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday that the 10 died out of 19 patients who were undergoing treatment.
Several months ago, cases of the monkeypox were detected in the Bangassou region at the border of DR Congo.

In addition to the recent monkeypox outbreak in the Congo, the CCHF Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic fever, and the fact that ebola is known to have outbreaks every few years in that area.

Now finally there are 7 suspected cases of Yellow Fever. All this in addition to the viruses which we do not yet know about. The place is a breeding ground for viruses of all sorts. Media reporting on these outbreaks is often slow and limited.

On 6 Sep 2016, Ministry of Health staff from Haute-Kotto health district alerted the central level of suspected monkeypox cases admitted at Ira Banda health centre. The index case was a hunter who fell ill on 17 Aug [2016] and died in his village without specimens being collected for laboratory testing. Between 4 Sep and 7 Oct [2016], 26 cases have been admitted and of these, 3 have been laboratory confirmed for monkeypox. Epidemiological investigations are currently on-going to evaluate the magnitude of the outbreak.

Delhi zoo shut down after bird flu deaths

[link to indianexpress.com]

The National Zoological Park (Delhi zoo) was shut down indefinitely Tuesday following confirmation that the death of at least eight water birds recently was due to bird flu, said sources. The death of a few ducks had been noticed about “four to five days” ago and a few pelicans were also found dead later, the sources added, terming the shutdown a “precautionary measure”.

Development and General Administration Minister Gopal Rai said, “Officials in charge of the zoo informed us about the flu infecting birds. The flu has been diagnosed as H5 avian influenza. The zoo has been closed for now and we are taking all necessary measures.”

Thanks Nawty, but we know how expensive these flights are..Somewhere around 250K per flight. Just doesn't make sense for them to be flying people with the less deadly viruses that are common to occur there. It would seem only fit to fly people with diseases that do not have an accepted treatment or are highly deadly.
