... Friday's advisory means all U.S. states and territories will need to begin testing blood donations for Zika. Previously, the FDA had limited the requirement to Puerto Rico and two Florida counties.

"There is still much uncertainty regarding the nature and extent of Zika virus transmission," said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's biologic products center, in an agency release. "At this time, the recommendation for testing the entire blood supply will help ensure that safe blood is available for all individuals who might need transfusion."

Ebola virus can remain in the semen to year and a half

Ebola traces may remain in the semen of patients who survived the disease until a year and a half after becoming sick, a longer period than originally planned, according to research released Tuesday.

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, published today in the medical journal The Lancet, found that 9% of the 429 men who survived the Ebola that were tested had traces of the virus in their semen and 63% of them tested positive to one year after recovering from the disease.

In at least one case, investigators found traces of the virus 565 days after the patient recovered.

Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey has said she was “hung out to dry” by health officials who cleared her to fly to Scotland to cover up the fact that their failure to detect the virus put lives at risk.

The 40-year-old she was “made a scapegoat for a catalogue of errors” by Public Health England (PHE), who were responsible for checking her on her return from Sierra Leone in 2014.

Speaking for the first time since being cleared of wrongdoing at a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing in Edinburgh last week, she said the PHE officials who pointed the finger of blame at her should now be investigated.

Among the failures she highlighted were a shortage of screening kits at the Heathrow Airport centre where she was examined, doctors and nurses being told to take each other’s temperatures and officials failing to contact experts because they had the wrong telephone number after she highlighted her elevated temperature.

Mayors say state told them to keep Zika mosquito sites secret

The mayors of Miami-Dade County and Miami Beach on Sunday accused the Florida Department of Health of lying after the state agency said last week that it never told local officials to hide the locations in Miami Beach where mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus were captured.

Florida’s health department strongly denied instructing local officials to keep the information confidential — and said the decision was entirely up to Miami-Dade — after the Miami Herald reported on Friday that a county attorney said the state agency had ordered them to keep it a secret.

The statement was made during a court hearing for the Miami Herald’s lawsuit against Miami-Dade seeking the locations of traps in Miami Beach where mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus were captured this month. The suit seeks disclosure of the locations on grounds that the information would help the public make decisions about precautions to take if they live or work nearby, and also inform the community debate on the use of the controversial insecticide naled.

On Sunday, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who is facing a runoff election in November, pushed back against the Florida health department’s denial with a written statement repeating that the agency had ordered secrecy in regards to the locations.

“During multiple meetings, phone calls and conversations, officials from the Florida Department of Health explicitly stated to county officials that information identifying the addresses of traps containing mosquitoes positive for the Zika virus is confidential during active, ongoing epidemiological investigations,” Gimenez said in the statement.
