What city would be the most likly target?
If russia and the US did go to war, what US city would be the most likly target for a nuclear attack. Also, how far would the fallout reach? Because I'm about 200 miles from detroit, and fallout really scares me.

New York as financial center. However the first problem is our missiles. Even if they blew up NY we would pop Moscow or somewhere. An EMP attack is more likely in my mind.

Detroit is already suffering post apocalyptic fallout. Why waste the ammo? The truth is that every city is a target but 90 percent of the population of any country could be eliminated by concentrating attacks on coastlines.

No clue. Look who is upwind of you, and consider if those cities are more important than Washington,DC or New York. Probably not, you are in a good position, I think.

Ya, I think they would probebly focus on the coastal cities.
Also, I'm not really worried about an EMP, I could make It threw that, but radiation scares the heck out of me.

Re: What city would be the most likly target?
Might be a little fuzzy on it, but I remember reading about this in college.

Primary Target Priority (according to my memory):
-Military (Active Military)
/Major Bases/Staging areas/Command and Control infrastructure
/Nuclear weapons storage, silos, submarine bases
/Major underground installations (NORAD for instance, or any "secret" bunkers for congress or other governmental officials

-Transportation and Industrial
/Major interchanges/hubs (Chicago and Kansas City for instance)
/Major civilian airports/harbors (could be used for military applications in wartime)
/Major Industrial zones, specifically those producing war goods (bullets, bombs, tanks, so on)
/Potentially any major grain storage area to contaminate the soil

-Civilian/Civil Defense/National Guard
/National Guard depots/bases, major Civil Defense reaction systems
/Nuclear Power Plants (yep, those were on target lists)
/State Capitals
/Significant cultural centers (fancy term for cities, most likely 100,000+ would likely be higher now...say...250-500k)

Top of the list is absolute high priority, and work your way down, fewer of these there are around you, the less likely you'll be blasted. Add a radius of about oh...50-100 miles and unless you have really crummy wind patterns that day you may even escape fallout. Downside though is that would be less than 5% of the total land mass of the United States. Then you'd have nuclear winter to kill you so...that's a different topic.

Re: What city would be the most likly target?
Command and control centers are the first order targets, so that would include Washington, DC and high-level military targets such as NORAD and Vandenburg AFB in Colorado along with the missile silos in states like Nebraska, Kansas and the Dakotas. Next would be lower-level military bases, pretty much all of the ones you can name or look up online.

Keep in mind, that your chances of survival are pretty high assuming you aren't close enough to be killed by the heat or the shockwave. Radiation goes down by 90% within just 7 hours and down by 99% within 48hours an 99.9% within two weeks. It would be good to have enough food, water and ammo to last you for two weeks and always pay attention to the weather so you "know which way the wind is blowing".

Re: What city would be the most likly target?
If you Wikipida Russian attack plans for the cold war it will surprise you.

They planed on hitting the west coast first, less of a chance of missiles being shot down compared to having to fly all the way over the U.S.

They planed on hitting Seattle, Portland, Salt lake city, SF, LA and Phoenix.
All in the first wave of strikes , multiple devices would be sent at all locations even some dummy/fake rockets just as a distraction.

It would put the US in such a panic and with US's return fire, would open the door for round two would be aimed at the east coast after some of the western defense systems would be down.

They have it all planed out, They would save the ICBMS for the east coast and hit the west coast first with Sub's parked right off the coast.

None of this is my opinion and it can easily be found online.

I would think some plans have changed in the last 30+ years but we will never know until 30 years after the event is over.

the jetstream would then scatter fallout from west to east
all over the nation.

You can bet the US has just as good of a plan
