The Crisis in Ukraine: Is American Politics the Worst Weapon of Mass Destruction?
For the fourth or fifth time in the last half a decade, a “People’s Uprising” is occurring–this time in Ukraine–and it is pretty clear that it has been precipitated by American influence. Now I know the media and many message boards that I follow are only talking about Russian influence and expansionism and a desire to take back what Nikita Khrushchev “lost”. This latter argument is totally laughable as Khrushchev gave up what became the Ukraine as a strategic option, he didn’t lose it or concede it at all. But that is for another post.

The reality of the situation is Ukraine was looking for financial assistance to cover their debts and the EU was offering a 15 billion Euro handout with conditions that Ukraine basically come into the EU. Obviously, Russia would find this an extreme threat to it’s national security, especially given the true nature of the Russian-US relations, which has never been very good. A majority of Ukraine really has no interest in joining the EU either, as they claim to be seeking freedom, and as Greece has clearly showed us, joining the EU does not give anyone freedom. Once that became clear the EU tasked the US government with orchestrating the current uprisings in Kiev and Crimea.

Ukraine has a complicated and tumultuous history, but has never really been truly independent since the 14th century. Lithuania, Poland, and many others have all claimed Ukraine at some point. The current Ukraine geopolitically speaking is really two countries. During the Soviet era Soviet leadership added traditional parts of Russia to Ukraine like Crimea, Karkoff, and Donet’s Basin. Now of course this was before the collapse of the USSR so no one knew that Ukraine would become independent. Since the collapse, the United States tried to basically take over Ukraine in 2004 through the Orange Revolution, and Washington came pretty close. The current government of Ukraine was elected through a democratic election and ever since they have been under great pressure from Washington and the EU to join the EU. Now this is purely speculation, but recent history pretty clearly illustrates this desire as having alternative motives like enabling the banks to come in and loot Ukraine for all it’s worth like they have done in Latvia, Greece, and elsewhere. And of course Washington has an interest in Ukraine as a strategic place to stage NATO bases and this could remove the ability for Russia to stand up against the US. This seems to support reports that the Obama administration wishes to remove the strongest deterrent to Nuclear war, which is commonly referred to as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).
