You can compare what earning vs. price ratios were back then with what they are now.

You dont even have to go back that far to compare, for example. The average working American in the 1960's could have purchased a brand new vehicle with two months salary .... compared to 12 months salary (for a cheap low end vehicle) and 24-36 months salary (for a higher end vehicle) nowadays.
