As an Oklahoman I can confirm. We've had more earthquakes here in the past year than we've ever had. Many speculate it is from fracking.

I know in the metro area, they aren't as bad as a little further east (of the metro area) like Jones, where my Aunt says they happen all the time.

This is no joke. Yesterday in the area of Edmund, Oklahoma, there was a 4.2 with several aftershocks. It scared citizens and set off sirens. Here is a quote from someone on facebook who lives there:

"Big earthquake... knocked my stuff off shelves... it was awful... my goats are totally freaked out."

I lived in an area in Ca. back in the 70's we heard LOUD BOOMS, then felt like a truck had hit the house. we had these kind of small loud quakes for about 6-9 mos before having a big one that was 6.2 or thereabouts. Very loud. the noise is very real. wrap/pack your antiques and precious glass items!

I live in NE Oklahoma - to the west of Tahlequah, and SE of Tulsa.

I work most days and cannot hear the booms inside.

But when I am home and outside, I hear them often. This past Saturday (2/15/14) I heard 3 and the last was around sunset and SUPER loud. Many will cause the ground to shake and this one did as well, but was even louder than most.

They sound like artillery or cannon booms. Not like a sonic boom (heard plenty of them in my youth growing up near Tinker AFB, before they were banned).

They seem to come from the ridge to the NW of us, and not from the sky. I have never seen military jets associated with them.

If I am in contact with the ground, I feel a mild shaking with most booms.

To my knowledge, there are no quarries or blasting sites nearby. We live on a major tributary of the Illinois river and the area derives much of it's commerce from agriculture and tourism. Few oil/gas wells, and little current drilling in the area. No known fracking as is common in central, SE and Western OK.

Very puzzling. I grew up in Central OK and have lived in various parts of the State. Never have experienced these booms before the past 2 years. Increasing infrequency as well.

Booms like this were reported prior to the New Madrid Quakes in 1811 & 1812. Many reports.

I don't think there is a fault line there in that area.

It really makes me think it is due to the fracking going on. I have no scientific evidence, but it does make sense to me

Right around the time of this earthquake, I swear I felt the shockwave go through me. The last big quake in Oklahoma that was felt all the way up here in Wichita, KS, I felt the shockwave first and then the shaking. It went right through my body like I had stuck my finger in a socket or something. I felt that last night around the exact same time, only this time I never felt the shaking. It freaked me out. For a second I thought I was having a heart attack (which was my thought also with the 1st quake until I felt the shaking).

This is a natural geological process. The pilots usually don't boom around here (although i wish they would). The fracking stuff is nonsense. Planetary gravitational etc forces are a more complex explanation. Small earthquakes around the same time show a geological effect.
To all the pilots out there, sonic boom more please.
The booms are natural. Earths plates are moving.

The new Madrid region may or may not have concern, but I am about 67/33 yes, so probably not, lol

I have heard what sounded like ignited stage rockets in the past 2 years though so that is a question. Like a long combustion process that lasts for minutes and I wonder if ballistics get tested here sometimes

Obviously you didn't read the thread or have no clue of history showing the many connections between earthquakes and sounds/booms.


Here's a piece from a 1979 issue of Science Magazine titled, "Natural explosive noises".
In which they go into South Carolina specifically.

Science magazine went into multiple pieces of evidence stating how booms PRECEDED the earthquake, including published 3 month before the earthquake!!!
Plus they show the sources to everything as well.

That should be obvious enough for you but lets go one step further.
Being USGS said there was little mention and evidence of these sounds preceding/occurring before the event.. I went into newspaper archives to see if talk of preceding booms made the papers long long ago.
