Scientists find 800,000-year-old footprints in UK
LONDON (AP) — They were a British family on a day out — almost a million years ago.

Archaeologists announced Friday that they have discovered human footprints in England that are between 800,000 and 1 million years old — the most ancient found outside Africa, and the earliest evidence of human life in northern Europe.

From the article: "Scientists dated the footprints by studying their geological position and from nearby fossils of long-extinct animals including mammoth, ancient horse and early vole.

John McNabb, director of the Center for the Archaeology of Human Origins at the University of Southampton — who was not part of the research team — said the use of several lines of evidence meant "the dating is pretty sound.""

Wow, I believe they jumped the gun pretty quickly. This is hardly an accurate way of dating things...

I agree, not a good way to date the prints unless that specific layer is overlain by distinct dateable layers. Any layers would probably wind blown or river deposited layers which are harder to date and correlate unlike marine layers which are usually consistent in thickness for large regions and easily traceable.

We walk on deposits that are already thousands of years old or older but it would be dumb to connect the two as time synchronous.

Thank you for sharing this link. I watched the documentary as a child and have always wanted to watch it again. It has seemed impossible to find where to look since I didn't remember the name. However, I remember very vividly watching as they filmed WHILE removing rock strata and exposing footprints next to dinasaur prints in a creekbed. I'm not sure if this is the same documentary but I do remember hearing the scientist in charge of the excavation was basically run out of town, so to speak, because he dared to say humans and dinasaurs co-existed. I know we have the technology now to fake such an excavation, but back then we did not.
