I am so fed up with asshats saying that we can't handle the snow or we can't drive or any other assanine attempt to put us down. This crap was forecasted to be 125 miles south of b'ham and this was at 8:00 am!!! By 11:00 James Spann was telling people to get a hotel room!!! There was even one guy from here calling people goons and getting on his soap box about how smart and well prepared he was. There was a massive pileup because they waited too long to let kids and parents out. People freak out when the thought of not getting your child enters their mind.
Bottom line southerners can and will endure because we help one another. We are the ones pulling neigbors out of demolished homes after tornadoes. We don't wait for fema we do it ourselves. After reading countless crap from some northerners there is no doubt I am where I am supposed to be. I love my state and I love my fellow man. Anyone that says different can kiss it twice.

Keep in mind, up north we have lots of snowplows and salters. Down south they don't because it doesn't snow that much down there. If there wasn't plows or salters we'd be in trouble too.

Another thing for those putting us down so--I watched my neighbor from Vermont who has bragged about his snow driving skills a dozen times slip and catch his hand on the door handle of his car, nearly busting his butt yesterday. Then he proceeded to get in his car and slide down the street sideways!

Guess they don't have slick wet ice in Vermont. Can't wait until I see him in person to ask him about all that! Yeah, we get it from the snowbirds when it's not even snowing. Turns out they are full of it.

Anyone know the procedure for reclaiming your abandoned car?

I'd start with calling the city impound lot.

I did hear they are being towed at the owners expense. Glad he made it safely. My dad decided to drive to my mom in the middle of the night, then got stuck with her himself. But lets be honest, being stuck at an open waffle house witha full tank of gas isn't a bad deal.

The news last night said that all cars would be moved to the shoulder so they wouldn't be in the way of the sanding trucks. They also said that the national guard would be patrolling to make sure the cars were not broken into. He is on 280? We are getting alot of sunshine this morning and I am sure they sanded 280. Hopefully his car is just pulled to the side of the road.

He said near Lakeshore Drive. I can't recall where that is but he needed to get to those apartments beside Summit Mall.
Hope he can get someone to take him back to his car.

Exactly. Your area is prepared for what weather conditions you see most. We are prepared for tornadoes. I wouldn't put people in Maine down because they don't have tornado shelters. I guess some folks just like to get their jollies by putting others down. Whatever. Anyone, anywhere at any time can be caught off guard. That's why you must be prepared at your house and in your car. Shoot, I could probably live out of my purse!!tounge

Exactly! Many homes in America don't have basements because they don't live in tornado ally. Same as Atlanta not having salt and snow plow trucks. I think people just like to feel holier-than-thou.

I think you just go get it. I don't think we have a precedent for this, but I have heard, today, that Pelham and Leeds are going to tow these cars at the owners' expense, which really pisses me off, because the next time this happens, folks are either gonna stay in their cars or try to drive through the mess, and both of those are really dangerous plans. It's not like these cars were voluntarily abandoned on the side of the road, and I'm sure most owners are trying their damndest to get their vehicles as soon as possible.

Well, he's off the radar again so I hope he is able to get his car.

Not sure how much of this will melt, evaporate or whatever with 3-4 hours above 40 but this weekend back to the 60's!

He did say he kept falling down in the ice while on his 6 mile trek.

It was 5º there last night but tonight only into the 20's so hope the whole mess doesn't refreeze into something else nasty.

I read the if the cars are towed the cost can be billed to the insurance company since it was done during a state of Emergency or something like that. But there is something in place to keep people from being gouged by tow truck owners.

How can they charge people a towing fee?!? We are still unable to leave our neighborhood. My husband went to see if the roads were clear and found that a home has burned to the ground. The firetruck is turned backwards in the woods. I wish this mese would just leave already!

The funny thing is, they were all over the news, two days ago saying, "Don't worry. We're not going to tow your car to some impound lot. Get somewhere warm, and we'll figure the car situation out later." I predict, next time this happens, people will remember that, and there will be a lot of dead bodies in cars the next day, and a whole lot of accidents from people trying to drive home on a sheet of ice.

So far, five people have been killed as a result of the storm, the report said, although no casualties have yet been reported for Jefferson or Shelby counties

The Situation Report's estimates may initially be low.

Just so you know this was nothing to laugh about. At least by the weekend, the ice and snow will all be gone as warming is on the way if only for a couple of days.

I watched Janice Hall on fox 6 say just last night that the army guard working with road crews would be pulling cars to the shoulder and not to worry that the cars were being patrolled. They also asked that you delay your work time by 2 hours and if it wasn't life or death to not be out at all. Now they are towing at the drivers expense? I have not had mail or ups or trash services since Monday. No way can they expect people to get to their cars!
