Walmart wants low paid workers. They got in trouble before for getting people to work through lunches (unpaid) and after they clocked out for the day. There are no butchers in the stores because they tried to unionize (I think that was in the Chicago area). A lot of other stores have since gotten rid of butchers to avoid unions after this happened and was successful. There is a long standing fight in Maryland over paid medical insurance. Maryland passed a law mandating insurance coverage for any company employing a certain number of workers where Walmart was the only retailer that had that number of employees in the state. I don't know how that one turned out or if it is still tied up in the courts.

I understand retail isn't a high paying job. Walmart makes a lot of money in part because of it's workers.
