Add this cold to it and it would be easy to push someone over the edge. Right now it's still horribly cold here and if I thought it would continue, I just don't know how I'd deal with it. Everything takes longer, you worry about frozen water, animals, endless snow continuing to pile up. But I'm thankful. Plenty of food, still have electricity, and spring is coming. Things change, often for the better. Couple days and it'll be back up in the 40's. I hope. LOL. For some people, it probably doesn't seem that way, but it helps to remember that just getting through today, a few days, a couple weeks, one day at a time will prove that things work out. |

On the few I checked, there are food banks, soup kitchens, shelters, dental clinics, affordable housing, drug and alcohol treatment centers, you name it. [link to www.homelessshelterdirectory.org] |

Sounds like it's important to get in shelters as soon as possible, especially in this cold. A couple articles: Homeless centers filling to capacity JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - As the weather potentially dips into the teens Monday night, homeless shelters are at capacity trying to help all the people get out of the cold. Across town at the Sulzbacher center, they're opening their overflow shelter in the library and feeding everyone they can - particularly with oranges. They received a large donation because the freeze would have killed the crop. Allison Vega with the Sulzbacher Center says it's fortunate, especially on nights below freezing, that the shelters won't turn anyone away. [link to www.news4jax.com] North Alabama homeless shelters didn't fill up Sunday night; more expected to escape dangerous cold next two nights (updated) Homeless shelters in Huntsville and Decatur did not fill up Sunday night, and officials attribute that to the cold temperatures not hitting until after dark. We have a lot staying here today. We let them stay in the day when it gets this cold and they don't have jobs to go to." - Salvation Army commander "I think that was because it was warm yesterday," said Capt. David Sams, commander of the Decatur Salvation Army that serves Morgan, Limestone and Lawrence counties. "But the cold today will bring them in tonight and even tomorrow night. "We have a lot staying here today. We let them stay in the day when it gets this cold and they don't have jobs to go to," he said. The Decatur Salvation Army has a shelter on 14th Street Southwest, and there were five or six beds not filled Sunday night. Sams said if the number of homeless exceeds bed space, they set up temporary shelter in the gym. [link to blog.al.com] Everyone needing help, hang in there. There's something, somewhere, or someone, who will help. Anyone having or knowing resources, please post them. Thanks! |
